Abandoned Tunnels
Old railway tunnels, long since given up on… but not quite empty.
Deep in the hills and mountains of the Overworld, the old minecart lines were closed off and forgotten years ago. The rails are still there. So is everything that moved in after the miners left.
Abandoned Tunnels adds dark, crumbling railway tunnels that bore straight through hillsides from one side to the other. Step through the arch, past the faded "TUNNEL No. 7 – CLOSED" sign, and see how far you get.
🚇 What You'll Find
The Tunnels
- Real tunnels through real hills. Each tunnel is placed where a hill stands between two lower areas, so it runs right through from one side to the other with solid rock overhead the whole way.
- Arched stone mouths with a heavy stone brick facade, a keystone, vines trailing down the face and sometimes old cobwebs stretched across the opening.
- Entrances that blend into the land. The ground slopes naturally into the hillside, with no square pads or flat platforms, just a ragged strip of gravel under the old rails.
- Built from a mix of stone: cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, stone, mossy and cracked stone bricks, andesite and moss, with patches of the raw hillside showing through.

Inside
- Old minecart lines, broken in places, with missing rails and gaps. No powered rails here, the power went off a long time ago.
- Total darkness. No torches, no lanterns. Bring your own light.
- Dripping dripstone hanging from the ceiling that really drips water, with the odd puddle forming below.
- Rusty chains hanging from the roof, cobwebs in the corners, moss, vines, mushrooms and rubble piles that half block the way.
- Broken timber supports that once held the roof up.
- Abandoned minecarts left on the rails, and every so often a chest minecart with something left inside.
- Side tunnels that branch off the main line. Some lead out through another entrance in the hillside, others end in a cave-in.
Loot
Don't expect diamonds. These were working tunnels, and the workers left behind what workers leave behind:
- Old barrels on the floor and tucked into wall niches holding torches, coal, mushrooms and mushroom stew, and if you're lucky, a worn stone pickaxe.
- Hidden storerooms with iron nuggets, gold nuggets, sticks, andesite and cobblestone.
Residents
The tunnels are dark enough for zombies, skeletons, spiders and cave spiders to make themselves at home.
⚠️ Traps & Dangers
The tunnels weren't just closed. Someone didn't want you going in.
- 🚪 Dark oak doors set into the tunnel wall. Behind each one is a small room. It might hold a barrel of supplies… it might hold baby zombies… or it might hold creepers. Do you open it?
- 🕳️ Holes in the floor. One block wide and 6–20 blocks deep, some with sharp dripstone waiting at the bottom.
- 🌿 Fragile Moss Carpet. Some holes are hidden under moss that looks exactly like the normal kind, until you stand on it and it gives way beneath you.
- 💥 TNT pressure plates. Stone pressure plates with TNT buried underneath. Step on one and you have 4 seconds. Watch out, zombies and skeletons can set them off too!
- 🏹 Tripwires stretched across the tunnel at knee height, wired to a hidden arrow dispenser in the wall. Cut them with shears or jump over them.
- 🐛 Silverfish blocks. A few wall blocks that look like ordinary cobblestone or stone bricks aren't so ordinary when you mine them.
🌍 Where to Find Them
Abandoned Tunnels generate in hills and mountains, and also in forests, taigas, savannas, badlands and plains wherever there's a proper hill to dig through. They're spread out, roughly one every 20–30 chunks and they keep clear of villages.
