Axoguard

Turn the axolotl into a loyal companion, from the water to the lava.

In vanilla Minecraft, axolotls are cute but independent. Axoguard lets you tame them, give them orders, level them up, equip them with armor and take them everywhere with you. You can even summon a giant green axolotl to ride!

Taming

  • Craft an Axolotl Treat and right-click a wild axolotl to tame it (about 1 chance in 3, like a wolf).
  • Hearts mean success, smoke means you should try again.
  • Tamed axolotls never despawn and remember their owner.

The Axolotl Menu

Right-click your axolotl with an empty hand to open its menu. Only the owner can open it.

Order What it does
Follow Swims after you and teleports back if you get too far away.
Stay Stays where it is.
Attack Fights the mobs you hit and the mobs that attack you.
Heal Stays close and gives you Regeneration when you are hurt.

Click the active order again to cancel it: your axolotl swims freely but stays tamed.

Levels and Experience

  • Your axolotl gains experience by defeating mobs, or with the Experience Treat (+25 XP).
  • Spend experience on 4 characteristics: Health, Strength, Healing and Speed (up to 10 points each).
  • It works like enchanting: each point costs experience, so the level can go down.

Axolotl Armor

  • 6 armors: copper, gold, iron, prismarine, diamond and netherite.
  • Copper protects as much as gold but lasts longer.
  • Prismarine makes your axolotl 25% faster, netherite 15% slower but much tougher.
  • Right-click your axolotl to equip it, or use the armor slot of its menu. Use shears to remove it (owner only).
  • Armors wear out, can be repaired at the anvil and accept Protection, Thorns, Unbreaking and Mending (Mending uses the experience your axolotl earns).
  • Bonus: the vanilla horse, wolf and nautilus armors can be enchanted too.

Carry Your Axolotl

Click "Put on my head" in the menu to carry your axolotl on your head (your helmet slot must be empty). Crouch to put it down. Tamed axolotls cannot go in buckets.

Upgrades

  • Water Bubble: your axolotl can breathe out of water.
  • Lava Bubble: fire and lava cannot hurt your axolotl, and it can go through lava.
  • Put them in the upgrade slots of the menu, or right-click your axolotl with them.

Healing

  • A tamed axolotl heals 2 hearts each time it eats its usual prey (fish, squids, tadpoles).
  • The Healing Treat heals it completely.

Potion of Lava Vision

Brew it from a Potion of Night Vision and Magma Cream. Inside lava, you see as far as in clear water. Redstone makes it last longer, gunpowder makes it a splash potion.

The Giant Green Axolotl

  • A huge green axolotl you can ride, on land, in water and even in lava (with the Lava Bubble).
  • To summon it, stand in water with your 4 tamed axolotls (pink, brown, gold and cyan) within 8 blocks, then throw 64 Axolotl Treats and 64 Experience Treats.
  • One green axolotl per player. It needs its special saddle, and level 10, before you can ride it.
  • With netherite armor, it swims 50% faster in lava.

Calling Conch

Blow the conch to call all your axolotls within 128 blocks: they appear next to you and start following you.

FAQ

Can I use this mod in my modpack? Yes! Feel free to include Axoguard in any modpack.

Does it work in multiplayer? Yes. Each player tames their own axolotls, and only the owner can command them.

Will there be a Fabric or Forge version? Not for now. Axoguard focuses on NeoForge.
