Beyond Experience

This mod removes experience from the game, making anvils and enchanting tables no longer need it, additionally removes mending, nerfs elytras and adds new enchants and items to balance the game. It's still in development and unlisted for a closed beta.

About

Description

NOTE: Some things might be missing and related to versions that are gonna be uploaded soon...

What is this about?

Beyond Experience is a cursed mod that tries to “fix” Minecraft by making it slower and a more interesting journey. It completely removes XP from the game and replaces it with Soul Strength. Below are some reasons why it’s so cursed (and awesome):

No more XP

  • Soul Strength replaces the XP bar and works very differently from the obsolete XP system. Removing XP had a lot of knock-on effects:
  • Enchanting Tables no longer require XP (lapis is still required).
  • Enchanting Tables do require higher Soul Strength for more powerful enchants.
  • Anvils no longer require XP (anvils can still break).
  • Anvils no longer hit “Too Expensive”.
  • Repairing gear with its material (e.g. Diamond Chestplate + Diamond) fully repairs it to 100% instead of vanilla’s 25%.
  • You can’t spam-merge level 1 books/gear into maxed equipment, anvil results are also gated by your Soul Strength.
  • Mending and Unbreaking have been removed.
  • Netherite has much higher durability, because without Mending/Unbreaking it would never have been worth obtaining or repairing.

How do I get Souls?

Getting souls is harder than vanilla XP. You only get them from living entities and blocks that are theorized to contain souls.

That means undead drop none (they don’t really have a soul). A bunch of farmable / questionable mobs like blazes and endermen also drop none, which kills most AFK farms on purpose.

Main sources (lowest to highest soul reward):

  • Animals
  • Soul Sand & Soul Soil
  • Piglins
  • Villagers / Pillagers / Illagers
  • Sculk
  • Ghasts
  • Wardens
  • Spawners (There are more sources, but this is the main list for now. Custom dungeons and bosses with consistent soul drops are planned.)

New Niche Enchants

A mod without a pile of highly specific comfort enchants nobody asked for? Are you serious? We need more enchants. More Enchants = More Fun! (Disclaimer: not always.)

Committed III, Leeching II, Ice Aspect II, Smash V, Density III, Weakening III, Stun V, Annihilation V, Reckless III, Deflect III, Flee III, Air Jump I, Soul Reap IV, Tiller II, Harvester, Excavation III, Pathmaker I, Acceleration V, Mineral Sense, Salvage III, Echo I, Debarker I, Timber III, Leafblower I, Clipping III, Shattering I…

I’m still coding the mod and I’m very slow, so I don’t have time to write a full wiki yet. Changelogs on the Discord explain what everything does, hopefully a proper wiki comes soon :)

Discord Bot Integration

On the official MC server with beta testers, we wanted ranks based on Soul Strength level and a way to link Minecraft accounts to Discord.

Why? Flexing on normies. (It’s not that deep.)

Configs generate a /souls folder with two files:

  • discord.json: bot settings
  • discord-links.json: linked players (Discord ID + Minecraft UUID)

(Scream if you are a developer and you hate technical documentation: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA)

discord.json fields
