Description
Camcorder HUD
Minecraft as found footage from a battered 1980s camcorder. The camera is carried rather than bolted to your head, the picture arrives through cheap glass and onto worn tape, and a record light blinks in the corner the whole time.
Client side only. Works on any server, needs nothing else installed.
Read this first
This mod is not for sensitive individuals. The camera moves constantly and the picture is filtered constantly. It can cause motion sickness, dizziness, nausea or eye strain.
There is a warning screen once per launch, and everything below can be turned down or switched off on its own. If you want the look without the movement, turn the camera off and keep the rest.
It feels handheld
The first person view is replaced by a camera somebody is holding.
- It sways with your walk, in step with your footfalls instead of jittering at random
- Every footstep lands as a small bump, and hitting the ground after a fall lands as a big one
- It leans back when you set off and forward when you stop
- It banks into your turns, and away from your sideways movement
- The view trails a little behind your mouse and overruns a fast flick before it settles
- Crouching steadies it, the way you would brace yourself
- Sprinting no longer stretches your FOV; the camera carries the sense of speed instead
The sway is tied to your gait rather than being random shake, which is what makes it read as somebody walking with a camera rather than somebody shaking one.
It looks like cheap glass
Colours pull apart towards the corners of the frame, red one way and blue the other, the way an inexpensive lens fails to focus them at quite the same size. The middle of the picture stays clean, so it reads as glass rather than as a filter laid over your screen. Adjustable from a hint at the very edges up to a visibly broken lens.
It looks like tape
Not a colour grade with scanlines drawn on top. This is a real composite video simulation, so the artefacts show up for the same reasons the real ones did: rainbow shimmer on fine detail, colour crawling along hard edges, colour that smears and cannot keep up with the picture.
- Pick the NES look with its strong false colours, or the subtler SNES and Mega Drive look
- Saturation and brightness
- Tape noise that smears along the scanline like analog grain, not pixel static
It is cheap enough to leave switched on all the time.
It has a camcorder display
The OSD a consumer deck would burn into the recording:
- A blinking record dot and REC, top left
- Battery bars, a tape counter, and the SP tape speed, top right
- The date over the time, bottom left, in the corner Sony and Panasonic used
Chunky white text with a hard black outline, in VCR OSD Mono, which is included. The battery slowly drains across a session. The clock reads your real time by default, or in-game time if you prefer.
It is burned into the picture rather than drawn over it, so it picks up the tape's filtering and noise along with everything else. Your hotbar, inventory and chat stay sharp and readable.
Everything is adjustable
Mods, Camcorder HUD, Config opens an ordinary Minecraft settings screen. Every slider updates the world live behind the menu as you drag it, so you can tune the look by eye. There is a Reset to Defaults button if you go too far.
Each of the four parts, the camera and the lens and the tape and the display, has its own on/off switch, and every individual effect has its own slider. You can also edit the config file by hand.
Still moving more than you would like? The biggest culprits are not the shake, they are the banking on turns and the extra view bob.
Requirements
Being client side only, it works on any server including vanilla ones, and changes nothing another player can see. It only touches rendering, so no gameplay and no world data.
Not tested alongside other camera or shader mods. Anything else that takes over the first person camera or the post processing chain will probably fight with it.
Credits
- NTSC-Adaptive by Hyllian, based on Themaister's shader, from the RetroArch slang shaders collection.
- The handheld camera began as a port of the camera from the Fabric mod MinecraftFoundFootage / spb-revamped.
- VCR OSD Mono by Riciery Leal.
- Made by TraoX.
