About
Description
Worried about players abusing commands on your server—or need to look back at chat that broke the rules? ChatWitness may be exactly what you need.
Built for server use, Chat Logger captures players' everyday chat and command input, classifying each entry so you can review it with ease. Keeping tabs on rule violations just got a lot simpler.
Installation
- Make sure your server is running Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge.
- Stop the server.
- Place ChatWitness
-1.12.2-1.0.0.jarin themodsfolder in your server directory (create it if it doesn't exist). - Start the server. If there are no errors in the console, it's installed correctly.
- Clients don't need this mod.
Viewing the Log
The log is written to the server's working directory:
This is usually logs/player-input.log under the server root. Open it with any text editor—Notepad, Notepad++, VS Code, and so on.
Notes
- The mod has no config file and adds no commands. It starts working automatically once installed.
- The log is append-only and is not rotated or cleaned up automatically. Back it up and archive it periodically to keep it from growing too large.
- Entries contain sensitive information such as chat messages, player UUIDs, and coordinates. Restrict access to the log file, and comply with local privacy laws and your obligation to inform players.
- This is a coremod that patches
CommandHandlerto capture raw command input. It may conflict with other coremods that modify the same class. After installation, check the server startup log for any ChatWitness-related errors. - To uninstall: stop the server, remove the jar from the
modsfolder, and restart. Existing logs will not be deleted.
The mod will continue to be updated with new features. Please share your feedback on Discord—thanks!
