Description

~~ CRAFTOMANCY ~~

Craftomancy is a mod that implements a magic system into Minecraft. It is designed to be lightweight, easily understood, and integrated with the gameplay, features, and systems of vanilla Minecraft.

Craftomancy is a Forge mod for Minecraft 1.12.2. There are currently no plans to support other versions of Minecraft.

MOD OVERVIEW

1: Archetypal Affinities

Most magical resources and items are linked to one of six elemental colors, which are associated with different physical phenomena. Each color has a different balance of offense, defense, support, and utility based spells.

  • Red is associated with fire and explosions. Red spells are highly offensive and particularly destructive to terrain.
  • Yellow is associated with air and electricity. Yellow spells provide a mix of offense and mobility-enhancing tools.
  • Green is associated with earth and nature. Green spells are equally split between offense and defense.
  • Blue is associated with water and ice. Blue spells emphasize utility over combat potential.
  • Black is associated with darkness and illusion. Black spells merge offense and status effects, with a focus on stealth.
  • White is associated with light and protection. White spells are mostly centered around defense and healing.

2: Fuel From the Stars

There are several types of magical resources which appear in the world.

Mana crystals appear in large veins commonly in all areas, and can be mined with any pickaxe. They form the foundation of all magical crafting, and are also used as fuel for magical items and machines.

Magite ore comes in six varieties, one for each color. Each type can be found in specific biomes and conditions. Magite can be mined with a stone pickaxe, and is used in the creation of elemental charged crystals.

The magical plants Scorchbloom, Fluteweed, Rockgrass, Frostbell, Gloomthorn, and Brightroot are also associated with the colors. They grow in small, rare clusters in specific biomes. Like magite, they can be used to create charged crystals.

3: The Chain of Creation

Creating a magical item is a complicated process. A usable spell requires three components: an arcane tome for the desired spell, a supply of charged crystals of the appropriate color, and a suitably powerful staff.

Arcane tomes can be created at a crafting table. Place a book in the center, four mana crystals around it, and four of some item in the corners. The item you use determines which spell the tome contains. There are 48 known spells, so you will need to experiment in order to discover them all. Each spell is associated with a color, and has a power level from 1 to 5.

Charged crystals are created in an essence extractor, which is crafted like this:

Simply place mana crystals and magite ore / magical plants in the appropriate slots, and wait (magic takes time.) Each resource will consume one mana crystal and produce one charged crystal of the same element. To bind a spell, you will need five charged crystals of the matching element per level of the desired spell.

Staves can be created with the following recipes:

Like spells, each staff has a power level from 1 to 5. A spell can only be bound to a staff of equal or higher level.

To finally create a bound staff, all the components must be combined in an arcane infuser. The arcane infuser can be crafted like this:

Place the items in the correct slots, and they will be consumed to produce a bound staff with the desired spell.

4: Energetic Exchange

A bound staff can be used by holding it and pressing or holding [Right Mouse Button]. Doing so will consume some of the staff's charge. The effect depends on the spell; It may produce a projectile, or the effect may be triggered by pointing at a block or living thing, or it may affect yourself. Some spells have a casting time before the effect is released, and some result in a cooldown time in which you cannot use spells. Magic is volatile, so you should be careful when and where you test out your spells.

Staves cannot break, but will run out of charge from continued use. The amount of charge a staff holds depends on its level. Once depleted, it will be unusable. It can be recharged with mana crystals by holding it and pressing [C], which will consume a mana crystal from your inventory and restore 20 points of charge.

Rather than carrying a supply of mana crystals, you can instead invest in an arcane soul. Arcane souls are created by placing one charged crystal of each color in a crafting table in any configuration. The soul is initially empty, but can be charged with mana crystals like a staff, and can store up to 1000 points of charge. While keeping a soul in your inventory, charging a staff will drain the soul's energy instead of consuming mana crystals. A fully charged arcane soul is also necessary to craft a level 5 staff.

Additionally, you can create a mana collector to store even more charge. You can charge the mana collector by inputting mana crystals or arcane souls in the fuel slot. The mana collector also generates charge slowly over time. It stores up to 5000 points of charge, which can be extracted by placing a staff or arcane soul in the top slot.

5: The Path You Choose

There is nothing preventing you from mixing and matching the spells you use or carry at once. However, if you choose to specialize, you can do so by wearing magic robes of a particular color. Robes can be crafted out of charged crystals of the desired color, combined with magic silk, which is made from string and mana crystals (sounds cozy).

Each piece of the magic robes grants bonus power to spells of the same color. You can mix and match pieces to get different bonuses.

There are a few other things worth mentioning. Some magical items have applications outside of magical crafting. Magite can be crafted into translucent blocks for easy storage. Magical plants each have unique properties when planted, and can slowly propagate themselves. They can also be crafted into dyes.

There are many things to discover. Always keep an open mind and an open eye for secrets. Puzzles want to be solved.
