Description

No modloader is required to use this mod! It's a Jarmod!

Crying Obsidian Mod

A showcase of the Crying Obsidian's respawning abilities

A mod that changes the way you experience b1.2_02!

b1.2_02 is a popular version of Minecraft Beta for the simple fact it has no beds, this provides the game with an interesting gameplay loop where you must spend your time wisely, collecting overworld resources during the day, and when night falls, cower or fight to survive. Back when b1.3 released, the controversial bed had been added, a lot of players found the item too over-powered, it allowed for night skipping AND setting your respawn point, all with 3 wool and 3 planks! This mod aims to provide a solution for respawn points, whilst providing great difficulty to obtain!

The Goal

This mod's goal is to preserve the game's original artstyle and faithfully improve upon the gameplay, this is achieved by using official early Mojang textures for the new Crying Obsidian texture (Introduced in b1.3) and Ghast Tear texture (Introduced in b1.9 pre-release) and researching what the (online) community of b1.2_02 players would of preferred over the beds introduced in later versions.

What's New?

Let's go over the newly added block and item!

Crying Obsidian

The mascot of this mod itself! The Crying Obsidian block is the obviously the newly introduced block in this mod, it allows for the ability of setting your respawn point, to prevent this from being abused however, the only way to obtain this block is to dedicate a lot of time into your world, you'll need to have at least found 4 Diamonds, gone to the Nether, found Soul Sand, found GlowStone, killed several Ghasts and return home with your findings! The recipe for Crying Obsidian can be found here:

The recipe to craft Crying Obsidian

Now you might be thinking to yourself, "That doesn't seem like a lot of work, and once you got it, you don't have to worry about it no more, right?" Well yes and no, once you have it, you do indeed own it forever, however as SOON as you place it down, it can no longer be moved, attempting to mine the block will drop a singular block of Obsidian, so think before you place it down, otherwise you'll need to obtain the block again!

Well okay, now we've got the block and placed it somewhere we know for certain we won't want to move it, now what? Well in order for the block to set your respawn point, you must right click it with a Diamond, this will absorb your Diamond and now have officially changed your respawn point! It can only be changed now if you mine the Crying Obsidian block OR feed a Diamond to another Crying Obsidian block.

Ghast Tear

This is the new item required for the Crying Obsidian recipe! This item has a 1 in 3 chance of being dropped from a Ghast when killed! This item may be familiar for those who play newer versions of Minecraft, as it's an item that was implemented in The Adventure Update! It has been backported to introduce a more difficult item to obtain and ONLY serves the purpose of being used to craft Crying Obsidian, adding yet another challenge in the Nether!

Final Notes

This is my first mod EVER for Minecraft, I'm also not very good with Java, I had always wanted to fill the void in the early Beta Minecraft (online) community where people complaint about the lack of respawn points, I have done my best to design and implement this mod, but I would not be surprised if bugs arise, if you encounter an issue, please contact me!

Licensing

I'm really sorry for the smelly license, I honestly want to release this mod under a copyleft license, however I'm still figuring out the best way to approach this, since this is a Jarmod I technically don't fully own the code written here, I hope this doesn't turn people away from using the mod, if I can't figure out a solution to release this under a copyleft license as a Jarmod, I'll find a libre modloader for b1.2_02 and rewrite the mod for that modloader, in the mean time, I hope you can at least have fun using the mod!
