Description
What is Dimension Maker?
Dimension Maker adds a dimension editor to Minecraft. Click the portal icon in the top-left corner of the title screen, shape a world with sliders, dropdowns and a live terrain preview, press Save New and Done to go back to the home screen.
You decide what the portal is made of, how it is lit, how the land is shaped, which biomes and ores appear, how the sky looks, and what rules apply inside.
Features
- In-game editor opened from the title screen, with a live terrain preview.
- Your own portals. Pick the frame block, the item that lights it, the portal colour and the size.
- Seven terrain modes: heightmap, flat, void, amplified, terraces, archipelago and sky islands.
- Realistic mode: use vanilla-style noise terrain from a preset (overworld, amplified, floating islands or caves).
- One-click world presets: Vanilla-like, Skylands, Amplified, Void with islands, Lava world, Ocean world, Nether-like and End-like.
- Biome control: choose which biomes appear and how common each one is, or design custom biomes with your own sky, fog, water, grass and foliage colours and mob spawns. Biomes from other mods show up in the list too.
- Custom ores: set the block, vein size, veins per chunk and Y range for each ore.
- Caves, ceilings and cave biomes for Nether-style or underground worlds.
- Structures: choose which structures can generate and how often.
- Dimension type options: height, coordinate scale, fixed time of day, ambient light, sky effects, whether beds and respawn anchors work, and more.
- World rules: allow or block specific mobs, turn natural spawning, explosions, fire spread, weather and player damage on or off.
- Return portals are built for you when you arrive, the same size as the one you entered.
- Saved dimensions panel, plus Copy JSON and Paste JSON so you can share your creations. or use them in a server.
Quick start
- Open the editor. On the title screen, click the portal icon in the top-left corner.
- Start from a preset, or begin from scratch.
- Set the dimension ID and adjust the tabs on the left. Watch the terrain preview change as you go.
- Choose your portal on the Portal tab: frame block, activator item and colour.
- Press Create Dimension. The editor saves your dimension and tells you where the file went.
- Load your world. If the dimension does not appear, restart the game once.
- Build the frame from your chosen block, then right-click inside it with the activator item. The portal lights up in your colour.
- Step in.
The first time you run the mod it also writes a starter dimension called example_dimension, so you can try a portal right away. It uses a crying obsidian frame lit with flint and steel. This can be simply deleted through the gui.
Building a portal
- The frame is a rectangle of your chosen frame block. Corner blocks are not required.
- With a fixed size, Fixed Width and Fixed Height are the empty space inside the frame, not the outside. The default is 4 wide and 5 tall inside.
- With Allow Any Size on, any frame between the minimum and maximum size works.
- The frame can face either direction (east-west or north-south).
- Right-click the inside of the frame with the activator item. Tools lose durability, other items are used up, and a bucket leaves an empty one behind. Creative players pay nothing. Setting the cost to 0 keeps the item.
- Breaking any frame block removes the whole portal.
- TnT can break the portals.
- Portals scale coordinates like the vanilla Nether does, using the dimension's Coordinate Scale.
The editor tabs
Portal. Frame block, activator item, activator cost, portal colour (hex), fixed or any-size frames and size limits.
Dimension Type. Min Y and height, logical height, coordinate scale, ambient light, fixed time (or normal day and night), sky effects (overworld, Nether, End, or custom cloud variants), plus toggles for ultrawarm, natural, skylight, ceiling, piglin safe, beds, respawn anchors and raids.
Terrain. The core of the dimension. Choose the generator and terrain mode, set the blocks for surface, subsurface, deep layers, floor and sea, sea level, scale and height settings, caves, ceilings, islands and a seed. Biome Surfaces gives deserts sand and peaks snow, like vanilla.
Ores. Add as many ore rules as you like.
Biome Weights. Tick the biomes you want and give each a weight. Higher weight means more common. Biome Scale makes regions bigger or smaller.
Custom Biomes. Build biomes of your own with colours and spawn groups.
Structures. Choose which structures can generate, such as villages, ruined portals and other buildings, and how frequently.
Rules. Mob allow and block lists, spawning, explosions, fire, weather and player damage.
Use the Saved button to reopen, update or delete dimensions you made earlier. If you leave with unsaved changes, the editor asks whether to discard them.
Terrain modes
- Heightmap: rolling land, the default.
- Flat: a flat world.
- Void: nothing but empty space.
- Amplified: exaggerated mountains.
- Terraces: stepped, layered land.
- Archipelago: islands in an ocean.
- Sky islands: floating islands, with options for size, thickness and number of layers.
Playing on a server
- Install the mod on the server and on every client. The portal is a new block, so players without the mod cannot join.
- Dimensions live in
config/dimensionmaker/as one JSON file each. Design them in the editor on your own game, then copy the JSON file into the server'sconfig/dimensionmaker/folder. - Run
/dimensionmaker reloadon the server, then restart it to load new dimensions.
Commands
Both commands need operator permission (level 2).
/dimensionmaker listshows the custom dimensions currently loaded./dimensionmaker reloadre-reads every config and rewrites the generated datapack. Rule changes apply immediately. Terrain, biome and dimension type changes, and brand new dimensions, need a restart.
Tips and troubleshooting
- My dimension does not show up. Check that the file exists in
config/dimensionmaker/and that the game log has noSkipping ... invalid configline. Invalid configs are skipped rather than loaded, so they cannot break your world. - The portal will not light. Check you are holding the right activator item and that the frame size matches exactly. Remember that fixed sizes count the inside of the frame.
- Realistic mode locks Min Y and Height. Each vanilla noise preset needs a fixed world height, so the editor locks those two fields while it is selected.
- Deleting a dimension removes its file, but the dimension stays in the running game until you restart.
- Back up your world before experimenting with large changes to an existing dimension.
Requirements
- Minecraft 1.20.1
- Minecraft Forge 47 or newer
- Required on both client and server
