# Dynamic Nights

Minecraft nights can become very repetitive. You wait for the sun to go down, deal with the usual hostile mobs, wait for morning, and then do it all over again.

Dynamic Nights changes that.

Dynamic Nights is a lightweight Fabric mod that gives every Minecraft night a chance to become something different. Instead of every night following the same routine, the world randomly selects a nighttime modifier that changes how that particular night plays.

One night might be a dangerous Blood Moon where hostile mobs become stronger and additional enemies begin appearing. The next could be a Fog Night where visibility is severely reduced. Another night might become completely silent, removing most of the usual ambient atmosphere. And sometimes a Storm Night can bring a full thunderstorm with additional lightning strikes throughout the night.

The idea behind Dynamic Nights is simple: keep Minecraft feeling like Minecraft, but make nighttime something you actually have to think about.

## How it works

When nighttime begins, Dynamic Nights selects one of its available nighttime modifiers.

By default, there are four possible modifiers:

- Blood Moon
- Fog Night
- Silent Night
- Storm Night

Each modifier has a configured selection chance of 25%.

There is also a protection against getting a Blood Moon immediately after another Blood Moon. Because of this, when consecutive Blood Moons are disabled, the actual long-term distribution is approximately 20% Blood Moon and 26.7% each for Fog Night, Silent Night, and Storm Night.

If Blood Moon repetition is enabled, all four modifiers have an equal 25% chance.

The selected modifier remains active throughout the night and ends when the night is over. Effects are designed to be temporary, so the normal Minecraft experience returns when morning arrives.

A Minecraft night lasts approximately 10,000 ticks, which is around 41.7% of the full 24,000-tick day cycle.

# Blood Moon

Blood Moon is the most combat-focused modifier in Dynamic Nights.

During a Blood Moon, hostile mobs become significantly more dangerous. They move faster, can detect players from farther away, and most hostile mobs receive an increase to their attack damage.

The default Blood Moon changes are:

- Mob movement speed: +30%
- Mob attack damage: +50%
- Mob detection/follow range: +50%
- Red screen/sky overlay: up to 26.7% opacity

Blood Moon can also introduce additional hostile mob spawning.

The mod makes two additional spawn attempts per player every five seconds. These are not unrestricted mob spawns. Dynamic Nights checks normal environmental and distance conditions before allowing additional mobs to appear.

Additional mobs:

- Spawn approximately 24–48 blocks away from players
- Must be at least 20 blocks away from a player
- Require suitable dark, solid spawning locations
- Are limited by the configured hostile mob cap
- Are also affected by the server performance protection

The additional hostile mobs are selected from four common hostile mobs:

- Zombie: 25%
- Skeleton: 25%
- Spider: 25%
- Creeper: 25%

The additional spawning system has a maximum of 36 hostile mobs within a 64-block area, helping prevent the Blood Moon from turning into an uncontrolled mob-spawning event.

Certain powerful mobs are deliberately excluded from Blood Moon modifications. Withers, Ender Dragons, Wardens, and Elder Guardians are not buffed by the Blood Moon.

All Blood Moon changes are temporary. When dawn arrives, the temporary Blood Moon modifications are removed and mobs return to their normal behavior.

---

# Fog Night

Fog Night changes nighttime exploration rather than directly making mobs stronger.

During a Fog Night, visibility is heavily reduced. The fog begins extremely close to the player and becomes fully opaque at approximately 32 blocks.

The default fog behavior is:

- Fog begins at approximately 0 blocks
- Maximum effective fog distance: approximately 32 blocks
- Fade-in duration: 2.5 seconds
- Fade-out duration: 2.5 seconds

This makes even familiar areas feel different.

A base or village that normally feels completely safe can suddenly become difficult to see. Hostile mobs can appear out of the fog, and exploring unfamiliar terrain becomes much more risky.

The actual perceived reduction in visibility depends on your render distance and surroundings. For example, compared with a 12-chunk render distance of approximately 192 blocks, the Fog Night can reduce practical visibility by roughly 83%. With an 8-chunk render distance of approximately 128 blocks, the reduction is roughly 75%.

Fog Night only reduces visibility. It does not increase the player's normal visibility or provide any unintended advantage.

---

# Silent Night

Silent Night focuses on atmosphere.

Minecraft normally has a lot of environmental audio happening in the background. During Silent Night, much of that atmosphere disappears.

By default, Dynamic Nights completely mutes:

- Ambient sounds
- Cave sounds
- Music

This leaves the world feeling unusually quiet while still allowing important gameplay sounds to remain audible.

The following sounds remain unchanged by default:

- Mob sounds
- Player sounds
- Block sounds
- Combat sounds
- UI sounds

Weather sounds are also not muted by default, but this can be changed through the configuration.

Silent Night is intentionally more atmospheric than difficult. There are no direct combat buffs or debuffs associated with it. Instead, it changes the feeling of the world and can make ordinary nighttime survival feel much more tense.

---

# Storm Night

Storm Night turns the entire night into a thunderstorm.

The thunderstorm lasts for the entire duration of the night instead of being a short weather event.

In addition to the normal Minecraft weather behavior, Dynamic Nights can generate additional lightning strikes around players.

The default additional lightning settings are:

- 8.3% chance per second per player
- Approximately one additional strike every 12 seconds on average per player
- Maximum of 3 additional lightning bolts per second across the server
- Lightning can appear 12–56 blocks from the player
- Fire and normal lightning damage are enabled by default

The lightning system is designed with multiplayer servers in mind. There is a server-wide limit so that large numbers of players cannot cause unlimited lightning events.

Lightning behavior can also be customized through the configuration.

---

# Randomness and Night Selection

The main purpose of Dynamic Nights is to make nights unpredictable.

You cannot simply assume that the next night will be the same as the previous one.

With the default settings, every modifier starts with a 25% configured chance. However, Blood Moon repetition is disabled by default, meaning that a Blood Moon cannot immediately occur on the following night.

Because of this restriction, the long-term distribution changes slightly.

With Blood Moon repetition disabled, the expected long-run distribution is approximately:

Blood Moon: 20%

Fog Night: 26.7%

Silent Night: 26.7%

Storm Night: 26.7%

If repetition is enabled, the distribution becomes:

Blood Moon: 25%

Fog Night: 25%

Silent Night: 25%

Storm Night: 25%

The exact sequence is still random. These percentages describe the expected distribution over many nights, not a guarantee for a small number of nights.

---

# Configuration

Dynamic Nights is designed to be configurable rather than forcing everyone to play with the same settings.

The configuration file is:

`config/dynamicnights.json`

After launching the game or server with the mod installed, the configuration can be edited to customize the behavior of the mod.

Depending on the available configuration options in your version, you can adjust things such as:

- Night modifier chances
- Blood Moon repetition
- Mob speed multiplier
- Mob damage multiplier
- Mob detection range
- Blood Moon visual intensity
- Additional spawn attempts
- Hostile mob limits
- Fog distance
- Fog transition speed
- Silent Night sound categories
- Weather sound muting
- Storm behavior
- Lightning chance
- Lightning distance
- Lightning damage
- Lightning fire
- Performance protection

After making changes, the configuration can be reloaded with:

`/dynamicnights reload`

This allows server administrators to adjust the experience without having to completely restart the server.

---

# Multiplayer and Server Support

Dynamic Nights was designed with multiplayer in mind.

The nighttime modifier is handled by the server, allowing players in the same world to experience the same nighttime event.

Blood Moon spawning and Storm Night lightning are also controlled with server-side limits rather than allowing every client to independently create events.

This makes Dynamic Nights suitable for:

- Survival SMPs
- Private multiplayer worlds
- Dedicated servers
- Hardcore servers
- YouTube survival series
- Multiplayer challenges
- Long-term survival worlds

The mod is also designed to avoid unnecessarily changing permanent world mechanics. Most effects only exist while their corresponding nighttime modifier is active.

---

# Performance and Safety

Dynamic Nights adds extra gameplay systems, but it includes several safeguards to prevent those systems from becoming excessive.

The Blood Moon does not simply spawn unlimited mobs. Additional spawning is restricted by distance, lighting, spawn conditions, mob limits, and server performance.

Storm Night also has a server-wide lightning limit of three additional bolts per second.

There is also a server lag guard.

If the server's average tick time becomes greater than 65 milliseconds per tick, additional Blood Moon spawning and additional Storm Night lightning are paused.

This corresponds to roughly 15 TPS.

The purpose of this system is to prevent Dynamic Nights from adding more work to a server that is already struggling.

Once server performance returns to an acceptable level, the additional mechanics can resume normally.

---

# Designed to Feel Like Minecraft

Dynamic Nights is not intended to turn Minecraft into a completely different game.

There are no new dimensions, complicated progression systems, huge collections of new items, or massive changes to the game's core mechanics.

Instead, the mod takes something that already exists in Minecraft — nighttime — and gives it more variety.

The goal is to make the player think:

"I wonder what kind of night this is going to be."

Rather than:

"It's nighttime again."

The effects are deliberately simple enough to understand but significant enough to change how you approach the night.

---

# Great for Survival and YouTube

Dynamic Nights works particularly well for survival content because the events create naturally occurring moments without requiring the player to manually trigger them.

A normal night might suddenly become a Blood Moon.

A routine mining trip might turn into a Fog Night.

A familiar base might feel completely different during a Silent Night.

A peaceful evening can become a Storm Night filled with lightning.

This makes the mod useful for:

- Hardcore Minecraft
- 100 Days challenges
- Survival series
- SMP content
- Multiplayer challenges
- Random-event challenges
- YouTube videos
- Long-term survival worlds

The player does not know what is coming next, which means every new night has the potential to create a different situation.
