Description

Kaos Credits: a survivor at a glowing Federation Broker terminal

The Federation pays for jobs, not for grinding.

Credits is the shared economy of the Federation Of Kaos mods. It adds Kaos Credits (₭), a per-player balance you earn by finishing quest content and keep through death, the Broker vendor whose stock grows with your record, and the Credit Chip for paying other players.

It is a library mod: Credits creates no credits by itself. Money enters the world only when a quest mod pays you for a job. In the Federation Of Kaos modpack that is Kaos Hunter (bounty contracts) and Kaos Missions (courier, salvage, intel, relay and survivor runs), and both require this mod.

It comes with:

  • Kaos Credits (₭): an account balance, not an item, kept in full when you die 💰
  • A currency nobody can farm: no loot table, recipe, trade or datapack creates it 🔒
  • The Broker: a datapack-driven vendor with reputation gates, daily stock and buy-back 🏪
  • Reputation tracks that unlock better stock as your record grows 📈
  • A Ledger of every transaction, in the Broker and for admins 📒
  • The Credit Chip, the one physical form of credits, for player-to-player payment 💳
  • A public API and JSON catalog format for pack makers and modders 🧩

💰 Earned only by doing the work

A survivor receives a gold credit payout after finishing a job in a ruined city

Every credit in the world comes from a registered payout source called by quest code: a contract kill, a courier run, a held relay. There is no loot table, recipe, villager trade or farm that produces Kaos Credits, so the reward is worth exactly what the content is worth. The only non-quest source is the admin command.

That is also why the pack does not use emeralds. Emeralds are renewable through trading halls and raid farms; a quest board paid in emeralds becomes decoration.

🏪 The Broker: stock that grows with your record

A Federation Broker terminal listing offers, with lower rows locked behind reputation

The Broker is a vendor screen that any quest mod opens from its own block or panel: the Bounty Board, the Missions tab and the Underground Market in the Federation Of Kaos pack. Each vendor has its own catalog.

  • Offers tab: every row shows the item, its price and, where the Broker buys it back, a green sell button. Locked rows stay visible but greyed, with the requirement spelled out (Requires 3 Contracts cleared). Prices turn red when you cannot afford them.
  • Daily stock: limited offers allow a set number of purchases per player per in-game day and reset at dawn. Offers can share one counter, for example "any one part of this tier per day".
  • Buy-back: selling takes one undamaged matching item from your inventory per click.
  • Ledger tab: your recent transactions with amount, source and balance after.
  • ◀ Back returns you to the screen that opened the Broker, at the same block.
  • Withdraw mints a Credit Chip for any amount you can afford.

The server decides everything. The client only sends buy, sell, withdraw or back; price, requirements, stock, balance and the denied list are all checked server-side, and a refusal shows a short red message (You have not earned that yet, Sold out until dawn, Not enough Kaos Credits).

What the Broker never sells: firearms, ammunition, gun parts, repair or cleaning kits, armour or augments. Armour is refused when a catalog loads, and the broker_denied tag hides TaCZ guns, ammo, ammo boxes and attachments and Kaos Protocol gun parts. Credits can never become a side door into the pack's harder economies. Augment consumables (stims, Overdrive and Recall charges) are the one exception, because they are used up rather than a power upgrade.

📈 Reputation unlocks, never spends

Quest mods register named per-player counters such as contracts cleared, elite cleared or relays held. They only go up and are never spent. Broker offers can require a minimum on one or more tracks, so a vendor's best rows open as your record grows, and each mod gates only its own stock.

💳 The Credit Chip

One survivor hands another a glowing gold Credit Chip by a campfire

The only physical form of credits and the only way to move them between players. Withdraw one at any Broker, hand it over, and the recipient right-clicks it to deposit the value into their own balance. If a deposit would pass the balance cap, the chip keeps the remainder instead of destroying it.

Chips stack to one, show their value in the tooltip, are not craftable, appear in no loot table, and drop on death like any other item. A server can turn withdrawals off entirely; existing chips can still be deposited.

🛡 Your balance survives death

A survivor respawning with an empty inventory while their gold credit balance stays intact

Kaos Credits are a number on your player, not an item in your inventory. Die, respawn, return from the End: the balance, the ledger, your reputation and your daily stock counters all carry over in full. There is no death tax. The balance is capped (one million by default) and can never go below zero: a charge you cannot afford simply fails.

🧩 For pack makers and modders

Credits is Forge-only with no dependencies, and everything that matters is data or API:

  • Catalogs are datapack JSON at data/<namespace>/fok_broker/<vendor>.json: per offer an item and count, a price, an optional sell-back price, daily stock and stock group, reputation requirements and an optional flag for items from mods that may be absent. Catalogs reload with /reload.
  • Public API: CreditsApi (pay, charge, balance), ReputationApi (register and adjust tracks), PayoutSource (the only way credits enter the world) and BrokerService (open any catalog from your own block or screen, with an optional Back target).
  • A built-in fok_credits:debug catalog for testing.

On its own, Credits adds the currency, the Broker screen and the chip. Something has to pay credits out: Kaos Hunter, Kaos Missions, your own mod through the API, or an operator with the command below.

🛠 Commands

/fokcredits, for admins unless noted:

  • balance (anyone, your own) and balance <player>
  • give, take and set <player> <amount>, all recorded in the ledger as admin actions
  • log <player>: the ledger, newest first
  • track <player> [<track> [set <value>]]: read or set reputation
  • restock <player>: clear their daily stock counters
  • broker <catalog>: open any loaded catalog anywhere

🧩 Server config

world/serverconfig/fok_credits-server.toml

  • chipsEnabled = true. Off hides Withdraw and refuses withdrawals; existing chips still deposit.
  • maxBalance = 1000000. Highest balance a player can hold; payouts above it pay only what fits.
  • ledgerSize = 50. Ledger entries kept per player (up to 500).

Prices live in each vendor's catalog JSON and payout amounts in each quest mod's own config. Nothing is hardcoded.

✅ Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47 or newer.
  • No dependencies. Required by Kaos Hunter and Kaos Missions.
  • Install on both the client and the server; the versions must match.

Part of Federation Of Kaos

In the Federation Of Kaos modpack, a post-apocalypse survival shooter, Credits is the work loop's bank: bounty contracts and missions pay Kaos Credits, and the Bounty Board's Broker, the Missions tab and the Underground Market spend them on tracking gear, stims, charges and raw materials, never on firepower. Credits ships in the pack and is free to use in your own modpack.
