FuelTraits: Heat & Food

Your fuel matters. Your ingredients matter. Your character finally has an opinion about dinner.

FuelTraits expands Minecraft cooking with fuel properties, new meals, bottled foods and drinks, and personal food preferences. The same furnace can produce baked, smoked or ingredient-enhanced food. The same meal can be someone's favourite and someone else's very polite complaint.

Heat & Food is our first major content update  — the beginning of a kitchen where your choices matter and throwing everything into a fire is no longer the entire recipe.

What's included?

139 new consumable items:  67 solid foods and 72 bottled products, including juices, jams, flavoured milk and milkshakes.
- 110 kitchen recipes , including further processing of prepared products.
- 61 food categories  and a personal taste profile for each player in each world.
- Fuel properties, heat levels and furnace additives.
- Minecraft-style interfaces, recipe search, a food catalogue and nutrition icons.
- A dedicated culinary advancement tree. Good decisions are rewarded. Some bad decisions are recorded for posterity.

A furnace with preferences of its own

Fuel affects the results of supported recipes. Burnable logs and planks provide low heat, coal and charcoal provide medium heat, and coal blocks and lava provide high heat. Logs and charcoal also add a smoky character.

Smoke meat, fish, apples and selected vegetables. Use additives to prepare caramelized or chocolate apples, or honey- and berry-glazed versions of five meats. High heat can turn apples, carrots, beetroot and pumpkin slices into burnt versions. More heat is not a qualification in catering.

Sneak and right-click the furnace with an additive in your main hand  to add one portion of sugar, cocoa, honey or sweet berries. Pouring honey returns its empty bottle. Sneak and right-click with an empty glass bottle to recover one stored honey portion. An empty hand removes the stored additive; for honey, that means pouring it away. Containers had a purpose after all.

The furnace's Variants  panel shows the fuel, additives and conditions needed for each result. Your first apple does not require a culinary degree.

The brewing stand has a second job

Put coal or charcoal  in a brewing stand's fuel slot to switch it to kitchen mode. Place a base, such as water or bottled milk, in the lower slots and add the recipe ingredient at the top. Process up to three matching bottles at once; every bottle uses its own ingredient portion.

A finished product can become the next recipe's starting point:

Use an empty glass bottle on an adult cow to collect bottled milk. The menu also includes mixed fruit recipes, golden variants, vegetable drinks and cake, cookie and pumpkin-pie milkshakes. A fork is welcome, but technically redundant.

The kitchen recipe book includes search, categories, an available-recipes filter and ingredient hints. Returned containers have their own slot. When the stand is idle, replace the coal with blaze powder to return to ordinary potion brewing.

A much busier pantry

Prepare ramen, fish soup, milk soup, pumpkin soup, salads, vegetable stew and pork, chicken, beef or mutton stews. Rabbit no longer owns the bowl. There are also ten new cookies and ten new pies.

Breaking pumpkins yields slices for baking, smoking, recipes or crafting back into a pumpkin block. Silk Touch preserves the whole pumpkin. Occasionally a slice is rotten, joining rotten apples, carrots and beetroot among the less convincing ingredients. Nature declines to comment on the best-before date.

Some desserts offer more than nutrition. Honey cookies remove poison, chorus cookies perform a short teleport in the direction you are looking, and chorus pie attempts to find a destination roughly 500 blocks away. The dessert chooses the direction. Your itinerary should allow for revisions.

Your world. Your tastes. Your questionable choices.

Each player receives three liked categories, two disliked categories and one allergy  in each world. The profile persists through death, dimension changes and reconnects. A different world gets a separate roll.

Foods you like restore more hunger and saturation; disliked foods restore less. Specific preferences take priority over broad ones: an opinion about apples is more precise than a general enthusiasm for fruit. Allergies work independently and cause temporary Weakness and Slowness. You can love a meal and still react badly to it. Your taste buds and the rest of you were apparently in separate meetings.

Ingredients used in crafting matter. Different meat in ramen or different fish in soup can change the categories a serving belongs to. Press J  to open your profile and browse food categories and products.

Food tooltips use familiar hunger icons and a dimmed saturation row, already adjusted for your tastes. Hold Shift  for exact values and ingredient details. Allergy warnings remain visible without an extra key press.

Advancements with a running commentary

Explore the culinary advancement tree by trying new meals, bottled products and your own preferences. Earn recognition for honey-glazed meat, mixed drinks, ambitious tasting menus and discovering that a favourite ingredient is also an allergen. An excellent dinner. A debatable decision.

Where are we going next?

Heat & Food is the first step. We want to expand the mod with new crops and vegetables, fruit-bearing bushes, more bread and dairy foods, and further ways to prepare ingredients. We also plan to develop furnace and cooking mechanics so heat and fuel choices play a larger part in the kitchen.

These are future plans, not features already included in this version or a promise of fixed release dates.

Installation and project information

- Requires Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.10 , Fabric Loader 0.19.3 or newer , Java 21 , and Fabric API 0.138.4+1.21.10 or a newer build for 1.21.10 .
- Put the mod and Fabric API in your `mods` folder.
- For multiplayer, install the mod on both the server and each player's client.
- English and Polish translations are included.
- Compatibility with other Minecraft versions or arbitrary mod combinations is not currently guaranteed.
