OpenGL Compatibility Bridge for VulkanMod
Bridge the gap between legacy OpenGL mods and the Vulkan renderer.
VulkanMod is an incredible project that completely rewrites Minecraft's rendering engine from OpenGL to Vulkan, offering massive performance gains and reduced CPU overhead. However, this architectural shift comes with a major caveat: VulkanMod is not a compatibility layer. It replaces the rendering pipeline entirely. As a result, any mod that makes direct calls to the OpenGL API (such as shader mods, certain optimization mods, or mods with custom rendering code) will usually crash the game or fail to render properly.
OpenGL Compatibility Bridge is designed to fix this specific disconnect.
What This Mod Does
This mod acts as a translation layer between mods that expect a standard OpenGL context and VulkanMod's Vulkan backend. Instead of forcing you to choose between Vulkan performance and your favorite OpenGL-based mods, this mod attempts to intercept and redirect legacy rendering calls so they can function within the Vulkan pipeline.
- Intercepts Legacy Calls: It catches OpenGL calls from third-party mods that VulkanMod does not natively support.
- Prevents Hard Crashes: By handling unsupported OpenGL instructions gracefully, it aims to stop the common
GL11crash that occurs when mixing incompatible mods with VulkanMod. - Restores Mod Functionality: Designed to get rendering-dependent mods (like certain HUD mods, visual tweaks, or utility mods that rely on legacy GL code) working again without disabling VulkanMod.
Important Disclaimers
Not a Shader Engine: This mod does not make Iris/OptiFine shaders work with VulkanMod. VulkanMod uses its own shader pipeline (see the Beryl mod for shader support). This mod is for utility mods that make direct OpenGL calls, not for full shader pack compatibility.
Experimental Nature: VulkanMod itself is a complex, constantly evolving project. Mods that deeply hook into Minecraft's rendering internals may still have visual glitches or incompatibilities even with this bridge installed.
Client-Side Only: This mod is required on the client. It does not need to be installed on servers.
Requirements
- VulkanMod (Fabric or NeoForge port, depending on your loader).
- A GPU that supports Vulkan 1.2 or higher.
Why Use This?
If you have a modpack centered around VulkanMod for performance but find that one or two essential utility mods break because they "touch" OpenGL, this mod is the fix. It lets you keep the high frame rates of Vulkan without having to sacrifice the specific mods you rely on.
Note: Please check the "Issues" tab or the changelog to see which specific mods have been tested and confirmed to work with this bridge. Compatibility is a moving target as both VulkanMod and individual mods update.
