Description
Gravity Mod
Minecraft 1.20.1 · Forge · Beta
Gravity Mod makes the underground something that can actually fail. Stone is not infinitely stable. Wide caves, thin pillars, and poorly supported ceilings build stress over time. When that stress goes too far, blocks weaken, crack, and collapse — sometimes as a single fall, sometimes as a chain reaction that empties a chamber.
This beta is a major step toward the full 1.0 update. Core systems have been rewritten around continuous support and stress, new inspection tools, a redesigned config, and new audio. Expect the world to feel less static and more structural.
Previously known as Structural Collapse. The mod id is now gravity_mod. Older worlds and items from structural_collapse are remapped automatically where possible, and old config files can carry over on first launch.
What the mod does
Instead of treating every block as permanently safe, Gravity Mod tracks how loaded solid blocks are and how well they are supported.
- Blocks near good supports gain stress more slowly
- Blocks far from support, or hanging over open air, gain stress faster
- Different materials support different distances
- Weak foundations under a “support” make that support less effective
- Faces open to air slightly increase vulnerability
- Earthquakes and other environmental pressure add into the same stress system
When stress crosses the line, blocks can fall as falling-block entities, spread instability to neighbors, and — in the worst cases — bring down sections of cave or surface structure.
The goal is not constant chaos. It is consequence: dig carefully, leave pillars, respect wide spans, and pay attention when the ground starts complaining.
Stability Scanner
A handheld tool for reading structural state in the world.
- Stress view — color overlay showing how stressed nearby blocks are
- Live stress — updates while held (size-limited for performance)
- Support view — shows support quality with a blue color scheme
- Adjustable horizontal radius and vertical range
- Pin a scan so the overlay can stay when you put the tool away
- Custom textures for idle and active states
- Craftable in survival
The scanner is meant for overview and intuition. It shows where trouble is building; it does not dump every number on screen.
Stress Profile Inspector
When you need exact values, use the inspector.
- Mode A — detailed readout for a single block (stress, multipliers, exposure, foundation, and related stats)
- Mode B — select two corners to study an area
- Top-down stress map of exposed structure
- Flat and vertical slice views
- Area statistics
- Copper / mechanical style interface
- Custom textures per mode
- Craftable in survival
Use the scanner to find the problem. Use the inspector to understand it.
Earthquakes
Earthquakes are world events that feed stress into the same system everything else uses.
- Configurable frequency, duration, and strength
- Stronger quakes hit harder and sound heavier
- Rumble audio is built from intensity mixes (small / medium / large) chosen from your configured strength range
- Volume scales with strength
- Screen shake and visual cues (where enabled)
Earthquakes are not a separate “delete random blocks” mode. They push the structure you already have.
Sound
This beta includes a new audio pass for structural failure:
- Short break/crack when a stone-like block starts to fall
- Impact sounds when mass hits the ground
- Larger collapses read as bigger impacts when many blocks fall together
- Quieter on the surface, fuller underground
- Earthquake rumbles that change with intensity and shuffle so events do not sound identical
Note: Dirt, gravel, sand, wood, and other non-stone packs are still limited or silent in this beta.
Config & presets
Almost everything meaningful is configurable.
- Redesigned in-game config menu
- Gameplay presets for how harsh the world should feel
- Performance presets: Potato, Light, Balanced, Heavy, Ultra
- Dependent options only appear when their parent system is enabled
- Commands to switch presets and to simulate stress buildup for testing
You can run a milder experience on a low-end machine, or push realism and range on a stronger one, without editing the same knobs for both goals.
Multiplayer
Stress, collapses, and earthquakes run on the server. Scanner and inspector data are networked. Gameplay rules come from server config.
This beta is intended for multiplayer, but large simultaneous scans, huge caves, and high performance presets still deserve real-world testing on your hardware.
Updating from Structural Collapse
- Install Gravity Mod in place of the old mod jar
- Do not run both jars at once
- Items such as the Stability Scanner and Stress Profile Inspector should convert to the new id
- Config values can migrate from
structural_collapse-*.tomltogravity_mod-*.tomlautomatically if the new files are not already present - Old custom blocks that were removed in earlier updates will not return; the world should still load
In development
These areas are present or partially present, but not finished:
- Tools config section (In Development) — more scanner/inspector tuning in the menu
- Non-stone collapse sounds (In Development) — dirt, gravel, sand, wood, and related materials
- Material balance pass (In Development) — finer per-block support, weight, and toughness tuning
- Earthquake presentation (In Development) — further feel, effects, and polish beyond the current stress + audio baseline
- Advanced support path option (In Development) — optional heavier multi-support analysis for high-end machines
- Modded block compatibility (In Development) — broader safe handling and tags for other mods’ blocks
- Visual polish (In Development) — scan waves, transitions, extra particles, and related presentation work
- Guide / in-game documentation (In Development) — clearer built-in explanation of colors, modes, and systems
Requirements
- Minecraft 1.20.1
- Forge (matching your 1.20.1 Forge recommended build)
Beta disclaimer
This is a public beta toward 1.0. Systems work and are playable, but balance, performance, and edge cases may change. Backup worlds if you care about them. Feedback and bug reports on the CurseForge page are welcome.
Dig carefully. The ceiling is listening.
