About

Description

Minecraft has no memory.

You kill a cow. It drops beef. A few seconds later, the world carries on as though nothing happened.

Guilt is the mod that remembers.

Every living thing you kill that never tried to hurt you leaves behind a ghost: a silent, translucent copy of that exact creature, slowly drifting behind you.

It does not attack. It does not make a sound. It does not despawn.

It never goes away.

It remembers the exact animal

The ghost is not a generic spirit model. It is recreated from the creature you actually killed.

  • The sheep keeps its wool colour. The cat keeps its breed. The horse keeps its markings, and the wolf keeps its collar.
  • Babies stay babies.
  • Held items, armour, and saddles come with them.
  • If the creature had a name tag, the ghost still carries its name.

That is the whole idea. This is not just a spooky particle effect. It is a faithful copy of something that used to be alive, now standing quietly behind you.

What counts

  • Always haunts you: animals, villagers, iron golems, allays, wandering traders, and anything else that was never going to fight you.
  • Only if you attacked first: wolves, endermen, bees, piglins, and other neutral mobs. If you provoke the fight, the death is on you. If you were defending yourself, it is not.
  • Never haunts you: hostile mobs. Fight zombies all night with a clear conscience.
  • Any tamed animal, including someone else's: killing a pet is never treated as self-defence.

There is no hand-written list of mob IDs in the mod. Guilt decides whether something should haunt you by looking at what the creature is and how it behaves.

That means mobs from other mods should work without needing a compatibility patch. Kill a harmless creature from another mod, and it should follow you home too.

The Quiet Candle

A candle, a poppy, and soul sand.

The Quiet Candle hides your ghosts from your own eyes for one Minecraft day.

It does not delete anything. Your record is never cleared, rewritten, or reduced. Other players can still see the full procession behind you, and when the candle burns out, every ghost becomes visible to you again.

The recipe requires soul sand for a reason. There is no relief before reaching the Nether. The early game, when the train is still forming and you are slowly realising what the mod does, is exactly when it should feel impossible to escape.

Echoes of the Past

Most of Minecraft's history belongs to someone else. Ruins, temples, monuments, and fragments of lore are scattered across the world, all left behind by people who were never actually there.

Guilt's history belongs to you.

You write it one kill at a time. Nothing is pre-written. Nothing generates underground. Nothing is hidden somewhere for you to discover.

The only history in this mod is the history you personally created, permanently rendered over your shoulder in the exact shape of the creatures it happened to.

It is the one record in Minecraft that you cannot dig up, sell, lock behind a wall, or simply walk away from.

On a server

Your ghosts belong to you, but everyone can see them.

You can look at a stranger standing across a field and immediately see what kind of history they are carrying.

Before you install this

  • There is no absolution. No item, command, ritual, potion, or player death clears your train. The Quiet Candle is the only relief available, and it is temporary, private, and intentionally difficult to obtain early.
  • A record created on 1.21.1 does not load on 26.1. Minecraft 26.1 changed how mods store this type of data, and the older format cannot be read. Crossing that version boundary will wipe your ghosts. For a mod built around permanence, we would rather say that clearly than let you discover it after updating.

Versions

  • Minecraft 26.1: NeoForge, Forge, Fabric
  • Minecraft 1.21.1: NeoForge, Forge, Fabric

The mod is required on both the client and server. Singleplayer works on its own. For multiplayer servers, install it on both sides.
