Description
Hostile Horizons
Hostile Horizons adds distance-based mob leveling and difficulty scaling to Minecraft.
The farther mobs are from world spawn, the stronger they become. This gives exploration a more RPG-like sense of progression, where travelling farther from spawn gradually introduces tougher enemies, higher health pools, stronger damage, and better-equipped hostile mobs.
Main Features
Distance-Based Mob Levels
Mobs are assigned a level based on their distance from world spawn. Nearby mobs remain close to vanilla difficulty, while mobs farther away become progressively more dangerous.
This creates a natural difficulty curve without requiring fixed zones, structures, or custom dimensions.
Health and Damage Scaling
Hostile Horizons can increase mob health and damage based on mob level.
By default:
- mobs near spawn remain close to vanilla difficulty;
- higher-level mobs gain increased maximum health;
- damage scaling is more conservative than health scaling to avoid making basic mobs unfair too early;
- scaling values can be adjusted in the config.
Equipment Scaling
Hostile mobs can spawn with level-based weapons and armour.
As mob levels increase, equipment can progress through configurable material tiers such as leather, gold, chainmail, iron, diamond, and netherite. Equipment is intentionally low durability and has low configurable drop chances, so it increases danger without becoming an easy loot farm.
Focused Mob Labels
When looking directly at a mob, Hostile Horizons displays a temporary level label above it.

Labels are only shown while focused, keeping the world clean and avoiding permanent nameplate clutter.
Vanilla-Style Health Hearts
Focused mobs can also display vanilla-style heart sprites below their level label, making scaled health easier to understand at a glance.
Configurable Scaling
The mod includes a generated config file that allows you to tune:
- distance per level;
- starting level;
- maximum level;
- scaling multiplier per level;
- health scaling;
- damage scaling;
- equipment spawn chance;
- armour and weapon tier weights;
- durability ranges;
- drop chances.
Example Gameplay Feel
Near spawn, mobs are mostly familiar and close to vanilla.
Farther out, enemies begin to survive longer, hit harder, and appear with better gear. High-level areas become more dangerous to explore, especially without preparation, armour, food, and backup equipment.
Compatibility
Hostile Horizons is currently built for Fabric.
Please check the file version for the supported Minecraft version before installing.
Notes
Hostile Horizons does not add new mobs, blocks, items, dimensions, or biomes. It changes how existing mobs scale based on distance from world spawn.
