InstaSmelt

Put ore and fuel in a furnace and the whole stack is done in the same tick.

Instant is not the same as free. Every item still costs the burn time it would have taken to cook normally. One piece of coal is still exactly eight items. The mod removes the waiting, not the price.

Requirements

Fabric API is not required. The mod has no dependencies at all.

Installation

Install it on the server. Furnaces only tick server side, so clients do not need the mod — though it does no harm if they have it.

For single player, just drop it in mods.

About the fuel

Each item deducts its recipe's cook time from the remaining burn time, and the next piece of fuel is lit when that runs out. Leftover burn time is carried over rather than thrown away, so the totals come out the same as vanilla down to the last item.

One piece of coal is eight items, in all three blocks.

That last part surprises people, so it is worth spelling out. A smoker and a blast furnace cook twice as fast — 100 ticks instead of 200 — but they also burn fuel twice as fast, because SmokerBlockEntity.getFuelTime halves it.

The two cancel out, and vanilla gets the same eight items per coal from all three. InstaSmelt reproduces that without knowing anything about block types: it simply charges the recipe's cook time against whatever burn time the block gave itself.

Experience from smelting is awarded exactly as before.

Configuration

config/instasmelt.json:

maxSmeltsPerTick only matters if another mod raises stack sizes. In vanilla the output slot will not take more than 64 anyway, so smelting still looks instant.

• /instasmelt selftest — build a real furnace, smoker and blast furnace, run a stack through each and check the fuel down to the last piece of coal. Works from the server console too.

How it works

• Injected at the tail of the vanilla furnace ticker rather than replacing it. Vanilla still lights fuel, updates the lit block state and does everything else it normally does; the mod only finishes the cooking vanilla would have spread over hundreds of ticks.
• The price comes from the recipe already matched, not from a second lookup, so what you are charged and what you get can never disagree.
• Leftover burn time is added to the next piece of fuel instead of replacing it. Vanilla only ever relights at exactly zero and has nothing to lose; adding is what keeps the totals identical here.
• The lit block state is synchronised separately. The vanilla ticker decides whether to update it by comparing against a snapshot taken before the mod runs, so it cannot see the change. Without this, a furnace that lights and burns out inside one tick would stay glowing forever.

Limitations

• Hoppers still feed at their normal rate. This speeds up smelting, not logistics.
• The progress arrow in the GUI stays empty, because there is nothing left to animate.
• Furnaces from mods that run their own ticking logic instead of vanilla's keep their own speed.
