This mod was made for ModJam 2026 - Echoes of the Past

Last Witness is a supernatural exploration mod centered around the memories left behind by the dead.
Some creatures are marked from the moment they spawn, causing their loot to carry an Echo of the Past when they die. Approach one of these haunted items and the entity’s final moments will begin to replay.

By exposing the item to intense heat, players can separate the memory from its physical remains and obtain an Echo of the Past item. These echoes can then either be crafted into an Echo Marker, allowing players to witness an entity’s most recent moments from its own perspective, or consumed to directly witness the echoes of the dead.

During these visions, the world is obscured by heavy fog, distortion, and unstable fragments of memory. Only the nearby surroundings remain visible, while creatures involved in attacks beyond the visible area briefly glow through the darkness.

But witnessing the dead is no longer only about uncovering what happened.
Every echo you consume is recorded in your Witness Journal, a growing catalogue of the memories you have interpreted. The journal keeps track of the creatures you have witnessed, their attackers and causes of death, the dimensions and biomes in which they died, the quality of their memories, and more. Every new discovery adds another entry to your collection.

Interpreting new memories also generates Resonance. The stranger and more varied the memories you uncover, the more your understanding of the echoes grows. Resonance can be spent inside the Witness Journal to unlock Witness Skills that gradually allow you to see deeper into the past.
