Like rabbits in vanilla, animal mobs now drop hides which can be turned into leather using a tanning rack.

Leather Working - Pelts & Hides

A vanilla-friendly extension that removes leather from loot tables and adds a tanning rack to be used with various pelts, hides, and skins as an alternative.

As a hardcore enjoyer, maybe it's just me, but I find leather to be too scarce for armor in early-game when iron is usually less than a chunk away and too tedious to gather in mid-game when crafting books for enchanting. This mod aims to make leather acquisition more convenient and immersive by allowing you to gather hides from various animal mobs to tan it yourself.

I propose that making leather more accessible makes sticking around in the overworld a touch more rewarding and viable so that going straight into mining for iron armor isn't as impulsive.

Features

Items

Removes natural leather drops and adds the following items:

  • Tanning Rack
  • Camel Hide
  • Cow Hide
  • Fox Pelt
  • Goat Hide
  • Mooshroom Hide
  • Ocelot Pelt
  • Panda Pelt
  • Pig Hide
  • Polar Bear Pelt
  • Sheep Skin
  • Wolf Pelt

Tanning Rack

The tanning rack block accepts all skins (including rabbit hide and rotten flesh) and turns them into leather over time. It functions similarly to crops - requiring aminimum light level, sun or otherwise, to progress.

Larger hides take longer to tan but yield more leather.

Configuration

Settings for minimum light level and specific hide duration or yield amounts are available to change in NeoForge's mod configuration menu for personal balancing.

Feel free to add to mod packs!

Future Plans

Given the time, I plan to add hides for more mobs as well as accommodate variants like biome specific cows, pigs, and wolves, and decorative features like taxidermy to add "statues" for different mobs and those rugs where the pelt is spread out with the head.
