Description
Leftovers
Leftovers is a Minecraft mod that reworks how food consumption works by introducing a portion-based eating system.
This mod is based on an idea I’ve had since I was a kid: the idea that food in Minecraft shouldn’t always be wasted when you eat it. Surprisingly, I had never seen a mod implement this exact concept in this way, so I decided to build it myself.
Core Concept
⚠️ This system does not apply to foods with special effects (like potions, golden apples, or suspicious stew) (at least for now).
Instead of consuming an entire food item at once, players only eat the amount of hunger they actually need.
Any remaining “food value” is preserved inside the item, allowing it to be eaten later. This turns food into a partial resource instead of a binary item (full or empty).
Both hunger and saturation are split proportionally, meaning the remaining item also preserves its unused saturation value.
Each item dynamically shows its remaining value in its name:
Steak (2.5/4)Apple (1/2)
Where:
- First number → remaining hunger value
- Second number → total hunger value of the item
Key Features
- Food is consumed only as needed (no waste)
- Hunger and saturation are both preserved proportionally
- Remaining food value is stored inside the item
- Item names update dynamically to show remaining portions
- Items with identical remaining values can stack together
- Works with all vanilla food items
- Lightweight and fully compatible with Fabric
How It Works
- The mod checks how much hunger the player is missing.
- Only the required portion of the food is consumed.
- Hunger and saturation are split proportionally and stored in the item.
- The item’s name is updated to reflect its remaining value.
- Items with the same remaining value automatically stack.
Design Philosophy
The goal of Leftovers is to make food management more meaningful without overcomplicating gameplay.
Instead of constantly carrying stacks of full food items, players naturally start managing partially eaten food, creating a more efficient and realistic survival experience.
Notes
- Requires Fabric Loader
- Fully compatible with vanilla Minecraft food mechanics
- Designed to be lightweight and performance-friendly
Origin
This mod comes from a simple idea I had since I was younger:
“What if Minecraft food didn’t have to be fully consumed every time?”
I had never seen a mod that implemented this exact system in this way, so I decided to create it myself.
