A small add-on that makes the shield emit light equivalent to that of a torch. Why choose between a shield and a torch when you can have both?

Description

Shield Light 🛡️🔥

Your shield shines like a torch — no more choosing between blocking or seeing.

Shield Light is a minimalist add-on that makes your shield emit level 15 light (the same intensity as a torch) while equipped, taking advantage of the Dynamic Lights dynamic lighting system.

Without this mod, you have to choose between carrying a torch to see or your shield to defend yourself. With Shield Light, you don't.

✨ Features The shield emits level 15 light, just like a torch, while in your main or off-hand. It automatically turns off underwater, just like a normal torch. Zero Java code, zero mixins — it's a pure data file that hooks into the Dynamic Lights tag system. It can't be broken by internal Minecraft updates or conflict with other rendering mods.

Completely plug-and-play: simply add or remove the .jar file from your mods folder whenever you want to activate or deactivate it, without affecting your world or datapacks.

📋 Requirements Required Dependencies Fabric API ✅ Yes Dynamic Lights (Tschipcraft) ✅ Yes — this mod works without it

Shield Light does not replace Dynamic Lights: it's a small add-on that adds the shield to your list of luminous items. You need to have Dynamic Lights installed for it to work.

🔧 Installation Install Fabric API and Dynamic Lights. Place shieldlight.jar in your mods folder.

That's it — no additional configuration required.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't my shield glowing? First, confirm that Dynamic Lights is working with other items (a torch in your hand should glow). If that works but the shield doesn't, your version of Dynamic Lights might use a different tag structure—open an issue or send me a message with your exact version.

Does it work on servers? Yes, as long as the server also has Fabric API, Dynamic Lights, and Shield Light installed.

Can the light level or water sensitivity be changed? The mod comes with fixed values designed to mimic a real torch. If you need different behavior, it's a simple change to two JSON files—contact me if you want a custom version.
