Description

Lightless Dreams

Step into a dream. Discover what waits in the dark.

Lightless Dreams is a Minecraft horror mod set in two unsettling dream worlds: a manor hidden in a snowy forest and a network of abandoned underground mines.

Craft an entry item, meet the mysterious night, and explore at your own pace.

Entering a dream

Both entry items use shapeless crafting recipes:

Entry item Recipe Destination
Dream Key 1 coal, charcoal, or ink sac + 1 snowball Snowbound Manor
Dream Stone 1 coal, charcoal, or ink sac + 1 deepslate or cobbled deepslate Abandoned Mines

Use the item in the Overworld. You can enter during the day or at night; an accepted entry request consumes one item. No commands or shaders are needed.

You can play alone or with friends. Eligible players within 64 blocks may enter with you, so gather your group before using the item.

Meeting night for the first time

night appears naturally in the Overworld. To look for him, try getting into bed, or explore an unlit underground area below Y=20. Leave a safe standing space around your bed.

If he appears while you are falling asleep, get out of bed to meet him rather than sleeping through to morning. Right-click him to talk and continue the introduction.

You do not have to find night before crafting an entry item.

Installation

  • Minecraft Java Edition: 1.21.1
  • Mod loader: NeoForge; tested baseline 21.1.219
  • Java: 21
  • Languages: English and Simplified Chinese; missing translations in other languages fall back to English.

Place the mod's .jar file in your mods folder. For multiplayer, install it on both the server and every client. Remove older copies before updating.

No shader pack or additional rendering mod is required. Back up your world before updating.

Shader compatibility

The tested combination is Iris 1.8.14-beta.1, Sodium 0.8.13, and Complementary Reimagined r5.9.3. Testing covers night's rendering and the mod's Iris held-light controls, rather than every visual effect or shader pack.

Iris hand-held lighting is disabled inside the dream dimensions and restored outside them. Placed torches and other placed light sources still work. Separate dynamic-light mods are not covered by this integration. If something looks incorrect, try playing with shaders disabled.

Before you play

This mod includes jump scares, sudden loud sounds, darkness effects, camera shake, and disturbing creature designs.

The normal progression in this release takes place in the Snowbound Manor and Abandoned Mines. Older experimental content accessible through debug commands is outside this introduction.

Inventory and multiplayer notes

Your pre-entry inventory is stored when you enter a dream dungeon and restored on normal exit or after death and respawn. Dungeon supplies are temporary; only designated completion rewards are carried home.

Logging out and reconnecting inside a special dimension clears your currently carried dungeon items. Your stored pre-entry inventory is preserved. This also applies to shared supplies you were carrying, so reconnecting is not a way to pause a round.

In multiplayer, participants share the starting supplies and completion reward; supplies do not scale with player count.

Future updates

Future updates are planned to introduce more dream dimensions with different ways to play, each offering its own rules, challenges, and places to explore.

night's story will continue as well. Later updates will develop his storyline and add more dialogue and interactions, letting you gradually get to know him through your encounters.
