Description

Locator Triangulator (Fabric, Minecraft 1.21.6+)
A client-side mod that utilizes the Locator Bar (/gamerule locator_bar) feature to estimate the positions of other players via triangulation.
🚀 How It Works
  • Data Interception: For visible players, the server transmits waypoint packets containing an azimuth (absolute bearing angle in radians) instead of a direct coordinate.
  • Packet Sniffing: A mixin (ClientPacketListenerMixin) intercepts these packets and stores a measurement for each player in the WaypointStore. This includes your own position at the time of measurement, the bearing angle, and a timestamp. Recent measurements are weighted more heavily, while obsolete data is discarded.
  • The Mathematics: The LeastSquaresTriangulator calculates the most likely intersection point of the bearing lines from 2 or more measurements (idealing taken from far apart locations) using linear least-squares regression. No iteration or initial guess is required, as the ray residuals are linear with respect to the target position. Additionally, matrix conditioning is verified, and a root-mean-square (RMS) residual error is computed.

  • HUD Display: The HUD displays the following information for each target: Name, estimated X/Z coordinates, distance, and residual uncertainty (RMS). A line below provides hints on whether the bearing angles are sufficient for an estimate, or if you should move laterally to improve the triangulation (increasing the baseline). If Minecraft sends a direct or approximate chunk position for nearby players instead, the HUD will display that instead. Player UUIDs are resolved as soon as the client learns the corresponding player name.
🕹️ Controls & Commands
Toggle the player tracking display on or off by pressing J (rebindable under Options → Controls → Keybinds → Miscellaneous). The HUD appears in a dedicated panel in the top-left corner.
The following in-game commands are available:
  • /triangulator status – Displays the current tracking status and the number of collected samples.
  • /triangulator clear – Clears all currently stored waypoints and tracking data.
  • /triangulator forget <id> – Discards tracking data for a specific target.
  • /triangulator lizenz – Prints the GPLv3 license text page-by-page in the chat; navigate using /triangulator lizenz <page> or the clickable Back/Next buttons.
