Description

Forgive the AI... I am a real person working on this mod :)

Project Note: This addon is planned to be merged with other Kings of Middle-earth (KOME) addon projects in the future as part of a larger unified KOME experience.

LOTR Kings of Middle-earth Addon

LOTR Kings of Middle-earth Addon is an unofficial expansion for The Lord of the Rings Mod for Minecraft 1.7.10.

The goal is simple: make Middle-earth feel bigger, more alive, and more interactive without replacing what makes the original LOTR Mod special.

Raise and ride enormous Mumakil, defend castles with functional Siege Gates, smash those gates apart with crewed Battle Rams, swim and crawl using modern Minecraft-style movement, keep battlefield loot under control with an Item Pickup Filter, and customize many of these systems for your own world or server.

The addon is designed around the existing LOTR Mod experience, including its factions, alignment system, hired units, NPCs, combat, settlements, fast travel, and Middle-earth world.

Main Features

  • Fully developed Mumakil
  • Wild Mumak herds and calves
  • Taming, breeding, riding, and hiring Mumakil
  • Mumak howdahs, drivers, and archers
  • Functional Siege Gates
  • Crewed Battle Rams
  • Castle gate ownership and player permissions
  • LOTR faction-based gate access
  • Native LOTR banners attached to moving gates
  • NPC reactions when a gate is breached
  • Modern swimming, crawling, crouching, and player movement
  • Configurable Item Pickup Filter
  • Configurable NPC bomb terrain damage
  • Survival-friendly Mortal Gandalf
  • Extensive configuration options for singleplayer and multiplayer

Mumakil

Mumakil are enormous elephant-like creatures that can be found in the southern lands of Middle-earth.

They are much more than oversized mounts.

Wild Mumakil may travel in herds, calves can grow into adults, and players can tame, feed, breed, and raise their own Mumaks.

Once properly equipped, a Mumak can become a devastating battlefield unit.

Mumak Features

  • Adult Mumakil and Mumak calves
  • Wild herd spawning
  • Taming
  • Feeding and healing
  • Breeding
  • Calf growth
  • Saddles
  • Mumak howdahs
  • Mounted drivers
  • Howdah archers
  • Player riding
  • Tusking attacks
  • Trampling combat
  • Custom models
  • Custom animations
  • Custom sounds
  • Visual effects
  • Mumak tusks
  • Raw Mumak meat
  • Cooked Mumak meat
  • Mumak-related NPC trading
  • Creative spawn eggs

A special Mumak with Howdah spawn egg can also create a complete war Mumak with its driver and archers already mounted.

Mumak War Formations

Mumakil are built to participate in LOTR-style battles.

Players can hire Mumak formations through appropriate Near Harad units, allowing them to become part of your army rather than simply functioning as personal mounts.

Hired Mumakil can:

  • Follow their hiring player
  • Travel with hired units
  • Participate in combat
  • Carry drivers and archers
  • Maintain their mounted formation
  • Use LOTR fast travel with their formation
  • Fight alongside other hired soldiers

Their large size also changes how they interact with the battlefield. Mumakil can push through combat, trample enemies, strike with their tusks, and navigate around obstacles while carrying their crew.

Siege Gates

Castles are much more useful when the front gate actually matters.

The addon introduces fully functional Siege Gates that can be built directly into fortresses, cities, keeps, and other structures.

Instead of receiving one pre-built gate design, you create the gate from compatible blocks already placed in the world.

That means an Orc fortress can have an Orc-style gate, a Gondorian city can use Gondorian stone and wood, and a custom castle can use whatever style fits the build.

Building a Gate

Siege Gates can be:

  • Built in custom shapes
  • Built from compatible Minecraft and LOTR blocks
  • Opened and closed
  • Damaged
  • Repaired
  • Renamed
  • Edited after construction
  • Assigned to a LOTR faction
  • Given player access rules
  • Given different operating modes

Large enclosed areas can also be filled quickly during gate construction rather than requiring every block to be individually selected.

Gates can currently reach up to approximately:

  • 20 blocks wide
  • 40 blocks high
  • 4 blocks thick

allowing everything from small castle entrances to enormous fortress gates.

Gate Control Modes

Gate owners and managers can choose how a gate should behave.

Automatic

The gate behaves normally and can be opened and closed by authorized players.

Locked Closed

The gate remains closed until its control mode is changed.

Useful when preparing a fortress for battle.

Held Open

The gate remains open.

Useful for settlements, roads, military staging areas, or periods when the fortress is not under attack.

A breached gate cannot simply ignore the fact that it has been destroyed; control modes apply to functioning gates.

Gate Ownership, Factions & Player Access

Siege Gates are designed with multiplayer kingdoms and faction warfare in mind.

A gate can have an owner as well as additional players who are allowed to interact with it.

Players may receive different levels of access.

Access

Allows a player to operate and repair the gate.

Manager

Allows a player to operate the gate and manage its settings and access permissions.

Owner

Has primary control over the gate.

Server administrators can also manage gates when necessary.

LOTR Faction Access

A Siege Gate can be associated with a faction from the LOTR Mod.

For example, a Gondor gate can be assigned to Gondor, while an Orc fortress gate could belong to an evil faction.

Gate owners can choose whether LOTR alignment should automatically grant access.

This allows you to build things such as:

  • Gondorian city gates usable by trusted Gondor players
  • Private castle gates that only named players may operate
  • Orc strongholds restricted to appropriate factions
  • Neutral gates with individually assigned permissions

Faction identity and player access are separate settings, giving server owners much more control over how settlements operate.

LOTR Banners on Siege Gates

Native LOTR banners can be attached to gate structures.

When the gate opens, the banners remain visually attached to the moving gate rather than being left floating behind.

The addon remembers the original banner information so that banners can be restored when the gate is returned to its normal blocks.

This makes it possible to create moving fortress gates decorated with the banners of Gondor, Mordor, Harad, Rohan, and other LOTR factions.

Battle Rams

Battle Rams are dedicated siege weapons designed to destroy Siege Gates.

A ram can locate a nearby enemy gate, maneuver into position, back away, and charge into the gate.

Rather than simply dealing damage while standing still, the ram attempts to perform an actual physical attack.

Battle Ram Features

  • Searches for Siege Gates
  • Approaches an appropriate side of the gate
  • Chooses practical attack lanes
  • Tries alternate approaches when blocked
  • Backs away before attacking
  • Charges into the gate
  • Handles ordinary uneven terrain during attacks
  • Can attack gates from either side
  • Repositions when an approach fails
  • Deals damage based partly on its charge distance
  • Deals damage based partly on how many crew members are still alive

A full, properly crewed ram is therefore much more dangerous than an abandoned or badly damaged one.

If a ram cannot build up a full charge because of limited space, its impact is weaker.

Fortress layout now matters.

Breaching a Gate

Breaking through a gate can affect the battle around it.

When a faction-owned Siege Gate is breached, nearby combat NPCs may react to the opening.

Allied defenders move toward the breach while hostile attackers attempt to push through it.

Once those NPCs find actual enemies to fight, normal LOTR combat behavior takes over.

This helps make a breached gate feel like a meaningful moment in a siege rather than simply making some blocks disappear.

The behavior can also be configured by the server owner.

Modern Swimming, Crawling & Movement

The addon now includes an adapted version of Aqua Acrobatics directly inside KOME.

This brings several movement features from newer versions of Minecraft into Minecraft 1.7.10.

Players can experience:

  • Modern swimming
  • Swimming animations
  • Crawling through small spaces
  • Modern crouching behavior
  • Player size changes while crawling or swimming
  • Camera movement that follows the player's stance
  • Improved underwater movement
  • Updated first-person and third-person movement presentation

The feature can be switched between modern movement and classic Minecraft 1.7.10 movement through the KOME configuration menu.

On multiplayer servers, the server decides which mode is used so everyone follows the same movement rules.

You do NOT need to install Aqua Acrobatics separately.

The required portions have been integrated directly into the addon.

Item Pickup Filter

Large LOTR battles can leave hundreds of dropped items behind.

Picking up every Orc sword, helmet, piece of rotten food, and other battlefield drop can fill your inventory almost immediately.

The Item Pickup Filter lets you decide what your character should automatically pick up.

Use it to keep useful loot while leaving unwanted items on the ground.

It can be useful for:

  • Large battles
  • Mining
  • Exploration
  • Looting
  • Farming
  • Adventure maps
  • Multiplayer wars

The Pickup Filter can be accessed from the normal player inventory and from supported mount inventories, including LOTR NPC mounts.

The system was heavily inspired by the item-filtering concept used by the Don't Pick Up (DPU) mod.

NPC Bomb Terrain Damage

Server owners can choose whether bombs thrown by LOTR NPCs are allowed to destroy blocks.

When enabled, NPC Orc bombs and similar NPC explosives behave normally.

When disabled:

  • NPC explosions still hurt entities
  • Explosion effects still appear
  • The surrounding terrain is protected from destruction

Player-thrown Orc bombs are not affected by this setting.

This is especially useful for servers that want large LOTR battles without having every fortress slowly destroyed by NPC explosions.

Mortal Gandalf

Gandalf has been adjusted so that he participates more naturally in survival gameplay.

Rather than functioning as an effectively untouchable entity, encounters involving Gandalf can interact more normally with Minecraft's combat and survival systems.

This option can be enabled or disabled through the addon configuration.

Configuration

The addon includes its own LOTR KOME Addon configuration menu.

Current configuration categories include:

  • Mumakil
  • Item Pickup Filter
  • Mortal Gandalf
  • Siege Gates
  • Battle Rams
  • Player Movement & Animations
  • Server Gameplay

This allows individual features to be adjusted without modifying the main LOTR Mod configuration.

Some settings are intended for server owners, while others can be changed by individual players.

About the Project

The goal of KOME is to expand the LOTR Mod rather than replace it.

The Lord of the Rings Mod already provides an enormous Middle-earth world filled with factions, NPCs, hired armies, settlements, quests, alignment, combat, travel, and exploration.

This addon builds on that foundation.

Mumakil are intended to feel like enormous living creatures and genuine battlefield units rather than giant horses.

Siege Gates are intended to make castles worth defending.

Battle Rams are intended to make those defenses worth attacking.

Modern movement makes exploring the world feel less restricted by Minecraft 1.7.10's original movement system.

Smaller systems such as the Pickup Filter are intended to make large battles and long adventures easier to manage without changing the identity of the LOTR Mod.

Development continues to focus on features that feel like they belong in Middle-earth.

Credits & Acknowledgements

This addon would not exist without the work of several other Minecraft mod developers and communities.

The Lord of the Rings Mod

Huge credit to the creators of The Lord of the Rings Mod for Minecraft 1.7.10.

KOME is built specifically as an expansion for the LOTR Mod and relies on its Middle-earth world, factions, NPCs, hired-unit systems, alignment system, combat mechanics, items, spawning systems, travel systems, and underlying framework.

The LOTR Mod is a required dependency and is not distributed as part of this project.

GeckoLib

Credit to the GeckoLib developers and the maintainers of the unofficial Minecraft 1.7.10 GeckoLib port.

GeckoLib provides the model and animation framework used extensively by the Mumak system.

GeckoLib Unofficial is a required dependency and is not included with this download.

Aqua Acrobatics

Major credit to the developers of Aqua Acrobatics.

For KOME v1.0.2, we took the Minecraft 1.7.10 Aqua Acrobatics codebase and effectively ported, adapted, and cannibalized the portions we needed directly into KOME.

That work provides the foundation for KOME's modern swimming, crawling, crouching, player resizing, camera behavior, underwater improvements, and related player animations.

The original Aqua Acrobatics project deserves credit for the systems and implementation that made these features possible.

The integrated KOME version has been heavily modified to work inside this addon and alongside the LOTR Mod, so players do not need to install Aqua Acrobatics separately.

Credit for the original Aqua Acrobatics work remains with its original creators and contributors.

Don't Pick Up (DPU)

Credit to the developers of Don't Pick Up (DPU).

DPU's approach to controlling automatic item pickup was an important inspiration and reference during development of KOME's Item Pickup Filter.

Alex's Mobs

Credit to the creators of Alex's Mobs for their excellent creature artwork and texturing.

The wild Mumak texture was adapted and edited from Alex's Mobs texture work, and Alex's Mobs also served as an important visual reference during development of the Mumak.

Credit for the original referenced and adapted artwork belongs to its original creators.

Future of KOME

This project is part of a larger group of Kings of Middle-earth addon projects.

The current plan is to eventually merge these separate KOME addons into a larger unified mod so that their features can interact more closely with one another.

Until then, this project continues to be developed as its own playable LOTR addon.
