Description
Chameleon: Camo Hide & Seek is a multiplayer hide-and-seek minigame for Minecraft 1.21.1 (Fabric), inspired by the viral game Meccha Chameleon (official page on Steam). Hiders paint camouflage directly onto their own player skin in real time and cling to walls to blend into the world. Seekers hunt them down with a paint shotgun. Last chameleon standing wins.
⚠️ NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT. Also not affiliated with, endorsed by, or associated with Meccha Chameleon or its developers (Lemorion_1224 & Haganeiro) — original game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4704690/MECCHA_CHAMELEON/. This is an independent fan minigame that only takes inspiration from that game's concept. It contains none of Meccha Chameleon's code, assets, textures, sounds, or files — every mechanic here is an original Minecraft reimplementation.
What you can do
- Paint your own skin in a live in-game studio — pick colours (colour wheel, brightness, opacity) and use the pixel-perfect eyedropper to sample the exact texel of any block, painting, or texture, so you match a wall precisely. Overspill auto-matches your sides and back.
- Cling to walls, fences, and ceilings like a chameleon — climb up, hold sprint for a fast climb, walk off the top.
- Strike poses from a pose wheel to hold perfectly still as scenery.
- Deploy decoy clones to bait seekers.
- Seekers get a paint shotgun with a reload animation and colour-matched muzzle smoke.
- Three game modes: Normal (tagged = out — the default), Infection (tagged = joins the seekers), Double (teams swap).
- One-command instant game —
/chameleon playauto-splits teams and starts a round in place, zero setup. New players get a "How to Play" card automatically. - Full lobby system: team assignment, map voting with thumbnails, a clickable host panel, timer presets (Quick / Classic / Long), and world-rule toggles (block breaking, doors, fall damage…).
- Portable map packs — arenas, lobby, and thumbnails save inside the world, so a whole setup travels when you copy or zip the world folder.
- Fair play — entity hitboxes (F3+B) are disabled during a round so seekers can't cheat.
- Spectate once you're out — free-look, follow players, player list.
How this is different from Meccha Chameleon
Meccha Chameleon is a standalone PC game. This is a Minecraft mod — a from-scratch reimplementation of the hide-and-seek concept inside Minecraft, built on things the original can't do:
- Runs entirely inside Minecraft 1.21.1 (Fabric), on your own worlds and servers — not a separate game.
- Minecraft-only mechanics that don't exist in the original: cling to walls, fences, and ceilings like a real chameleon, pose as scenery, deploy decoy clones, and a whistle ping.
- Paint the actual Minecraft player skin texel-by-texel with a pixel-perfect eyedropper that samples any block/painting texture in the world.
- Minecraft-native lobby, map voting, host command panel, timer presets, and world-rule toggles, plus portable map packs saved inside the world file.
- Three modes (Normal / Infection / Double) tuned for Minecraft multiplayer servers.
No content from Meccha Chameleon is reused — only the general "paint yourself and hide" idea is shared.
How to play
Host (an operator) types /chameleon play for an instant game, or /chameleon to open the control panel — then hide as a chameleon or hunt as a seeker.
Keybinds (all rebindable in Options → Controls → "Chameleon"): G paint studio · K auto-camouflage · V wall cling · X lock in place · C decoy · R pose wheel · H whistle · B free-look (when out) · LMB fire paint shotgun (seekers).
Host commands: /chameleon play = instant game · /chameleon = full clickable panel (start, stop, map vote, team split, timers, game mode, world rules). Everything else is one tidy /mcx settings command. Full reference in the wiki.
⚠️ Multiplayer setup (read this — #1 source of confusion)
This mod must be installed on both the client AND the server. For a dedicated server, drop the jar in the server's mods/ folder and restart. For playing with friends over LAN, the host and every player needs the mod. Server-side features (rounds, teams, maps) will not work if only the client has it.
