Description
What it does
Mob Drivers lets companions and NPCs drive vehicles from other mods along routes you record yourself. Walk or drive a road once and the route is recorded; give it to a driver and they follow it, obeying whatever you put on it.
Routes are made of waypoints, and every waypoint can be something: a drive-through, a timed stop, a stop sign, a give way, a traffic light, a named bus stop, a fuel stop or a depot. Routes run one way, in a loop, there and back, or wandering a network of other routes at random.
Traffic behaves like traffic. Drivers follow the vehicle in front at a sensible gap instead of braking to a halt behind it. Each driver has slightly different habits, so a queue at a green light pulls away one after another rather than all at once. Stop signs and give ways yield to whoever is already crossing. Traffic lights run either off redstone or off a timer, and two roads set to opposite phases make a junction that runs itself.
Roads have sides. Set a lane offset and traffic keeps to its own side of the line you recorded, with one click to generate the return lane. The route overlay draws direction arrows, so you can see which way a route runs and where it meets another.
Driving to the conditions. Rain, storms, ice, sand and village paths slow drivers down and lengthen every braking distance. Headlights come on after dark and in tunnels, indicators before a turn, and the horn at whoever has been standing in the road too long.
Tools for building routes. A route editor that needs no commands; corner smoothing; a route check that reads a route over and names what looks wrong; export and import to a file; and speed limits recorded simply by driving the route the way you want it driven.
Supported mods
| Mod | What it provides |
|---|---|
| Touhou Little Maid | Maids as drivers, with a Driving job of their own |
| Ultimate Car Mod | Every car the mod defines |
| Immersive Vehicles (MTS) | Ground vehicles from any content pack |
None of them is required, and none is included. Install whichever you already use. Other mods can add their own drivers and vehicles through a public API, or a tag for simple cases.
Getting started
- Craft a Route Planner (paper, a compass and redstone).
- Sneak and right-click the air to start recording, walk or drive your road, then stop.
- Right-click a companion to pick your driver, right-click a vehicle to pick the vehicle.
- Right-click the air to open the screen, and press START.
There is also /mobdrivers route testcircuit <name>, which lays out a complete test course around you with one of every waypoint kind on it.
What is and is not tested
This is an honest beta, and I would rather say so than have you find out.
Watched working in a real game: driving recorded routes, timed stops, cornering, refuelling at a pump, the Immersive Vehicles and Ultimate Car integrations, and the maid driving job.
Built and unit-tested, but not yet seen working in game: passengers boarding buses, ambient townsfolk traffic, overtaking, emergency routes, the dispatcher board and the Stop Sensor block. 143 automated tests pass, which is not the same thing as having watched it drive.
Reporting problems
Use the comments on this page. Turning on debug in config/mobdrivers-server.toml makes each driver log what it is doing once a second, which is usually what identifies a problem in one line.
AI development disclosure
This project was developed with extensive assistance from generative AI tools. Generated code is reviewed, compiled and tested before release, and where a feature has not been verified in game the changelog says so explicitly rather than implying it works.
