Description

Overbrew

What it does

This datapack expands the brewing system with 20 normally unbrewable potion effects, additional duration and amplifier tiers, custom Brewing Stand fuels, and particle-free potions. Every supported effect is available as a regular, splash, and lingering potion.

Potion Upgrades

New Tiers
Overbrew expands the standard Redstone and Glowstone upgrade paths with two additional tiers:

  • Prolonged Potions:
    • Brewed from Extended potions using Redstone Blocks
    • Continues the increase between the Regular and Extended durations.
    • Potent Potions:
      • Brewed from Strong potions using Glowstone Blocks
      • Further increases their amplifier level.

Mixed Upgrades
Compatible duration and amplifier upgrades can also be combined in any order. For example, a Strong potion can be extended, or a Prolonged potion can be strengthened.

New Potions

Overbrew adds new potions for effects that were previously unbrewable. All listed ingredients are brewed into an Awkward Potion made with Nether Wart.

Corruption

Brewing the following potions with a Fermented Spider Eye converts them into their opposing effects, while still preserving their duration and amplifier tier:

Haste Mining Fatigue
Saturation Hunger

Expanded Vanilla Potions

Overbrew fills in missing variants for vanilla potion families, including combinations of existing and new upgrades.

Remove Potion Particles

Brewing any potion with a Resin Clump hides its effect particles and adds a No Particles line to its tooltip.

Particle-free potions can still receive compatible duration, amplifier, corruption, splash, and lingering modifiers.

Brewing Fuels

Overbrew adds two custom Brewing Stand fuels, with both recipes unlocking when the player obtains Blaze Powder.

Potent Blaze Powder
Provides 10 brewing uses at 2x speed.
It is crafted using Blaze Powder and Potent Sulfur.

Volatile Blaze Powder
Independently rolls its number of uses and brewing speed whenever it refuels a Brewing Stand.
It is crafted using Blaze Powder, Potent Sulfur, and Gunpowder.

Tables for the roll chances
Result Chance
4 uses 30%
10 uses 50%
24 uses 20%
Result Chance
0.5x speed 30%
2x speed 50%
4x speed 20%

Advancements

Overbrew adds a separate advancement tab with goals for brewing and upgrading its new potions.

Component-Preserving Tipped Arrows

The vanilla tipped-arrow recipe is replaced with a minecraft:crafting_transmute recipe.
Crafted arrows now copy every compatible component from the lingering potion except minecraft:custom_name, preserving custom effects, particle settings, colors, and other supported potion data.

Brewing Tags

Overbrew exposes potion bases, effect ingredients, and modifiers through item tags.

Examples of tags

Potion Bases

#overbrew:brewing/base/awkward
#overbrew:brewing/base/mundane
#overbrew:brewing/base/thick

Effect Ingredients

#overbrew:brewing/effect/absorption
#overbrew:brewing/effect/bad_luck
#overbrew:brewing/effect/decay
#overbrew:brewing/effect/haste
#overbrew:brewing/effect/resistance
#overbrew:brewing/effect/withering

Duration and Amplifier Modifiers

#overbrew:brewing/modifier/extended
#overbrew:brewing/modifier/prolonged
#overbrew:brewing/modifier/strong
#overbrew:brewing/modifier/potent

Other Modifiers

#overbrew:brewing/modifier/corrupting
#overbrew:brewing/modifier/splash
#overbrew:brewing/modifier/lingering
#overbrew:brewing/modifier/no_particles

These tags allow other datapacks to add or replace brewing ingredients without overriding every individual Overbrew or supported vanilla recipe.

For example, adding another item to #overbrew:brewing/modifier/extended makes it an alternative to Redstone Dust in every applicable recipe.

Recipe Generator

The recipe generator is available in the project's source repository.

It supports custom and vanilla potion families, reusable variant profiles, mixed duration and amplifier grids, custom modifiers, potion transformations, item tags, advancements, generated tables, component preservation, validation, conflict resolution, and format-gated overlays.

What's Next

Future updates may add cauldron storage, potion mixing, more custom modifiers, and new potion brewing features introduced to datapacks.
