PCA Weapons

Fun, kid-friendly weapons for your school Minecraft club: paintball and snowball blasters, a squeaky hammer and a pool noodle, a flashbang and other grenades, and magic wands for fighting mobs. You choose what they do to players: nothing, a harmless tag, or real damage.

PCA Weapons adds 15 weapons that are silly rather than scary. Nothing is gory, nothing breaks or burns blocks, and blasters, melee weapons and wands never wear out or need ammo. Against mobs they all do real damage. Against other players, the teacher picks the rules with one command, and the default is tag: knockback and effects, never damage, so nobody gets knocked out.

It was made by Pixel Creators Academy for school Minecraft clubs and works on any Forge 1.20.1 server.

What it's like to use

  1. The teacher types /weapons give @a blasters, and every student gets a Paintball Blaster, a Snowball Launcher, a Bubble Wand and a Foam Dart Crossbow.
  2. Ben hits Amy with a paintball. "Tagged Amy!" She glows pink for five seconds, so everyone can see she's been got, but she isn't hurt.
  3. Amy throws a flashbang. It bounces off a wall, rolls to a stop... and BANG. Everyone looking at it sees white, with their ears ringing. Amy remembered to look away.
  4. A zombie wanders in. The Lightning Staff calls a bolt down on it: real damage for mobs, and no fire, so the classroom build is safe.
  5. Too rowdy? /weapons pvp off and weapons go straight through other players, or /weapons disable flashbang switches one off for everyone.

The weapons

Blasters (right-click, no ammo)

  • Paintball Blaster: paintballs in your own colour. Whoever you hit glows for 5 seconds.
  • Snowball Launcher: hold right-click to spray snowballs. Hits slow the target down.
  • Bubble Wand: slow, floating bubbles that lift whoever they pop on into the air. They land softly.
  • Foam Dart Crossbow: fast foam darts with a good push.

Silly melee

  • Squeaky Hammer: a giant toy hammer. SQUEAK! Sends people flying, and they land softly.
  • Pool Noodle: very fast, very floppy. Bonk!
  • Fish Slapper: a slap with a wet fish.
  • Boxing Glove: a huge punch that knocks people up and away.

Throwables (they bounce, then go off)

  • Flashbang: a bang and a white flash. Players looking at it are dazzled (their screen goes white and fades back, and their ears ring); facing away or behind a wall helps a lot. Mobs that see it are blinded and forget who they were chasing. No damage.
  • Slime Grenade: bounces everyone nearby into the air. Nobody gets hurt landing.
  • Smoke Bomb: a thick cloud for 10 seconds. Nobody can see out of it, and mobs lose track of you.
  • Confetti Grenade: confetti and fireworks. That's it. Party!

Magic wands (for fighting mobs)

  • Lightning Staff: calls lightning down where you look, up to 32 blocks away. No fire, no burnt blocks.
  • Frost Wand: ice bolts that slow and frost mobs.
  • Fireball Wand: fireballs that set mobs alight but never start fires.

Features

For teachers

  • Three PVP modes, changed with one command and announced to everyone:
    • Off: weapons go straight through other players.
    • Tag (the default): knockback and effects (paint glow, slowness, the bubble lift, the flash), never damage. Both players see a "Tagged!" message.
    • Full: damage too, at half strength by default (you can change it). The server's own PVP setting still applies.
  • Mobs always take full damage, whatever the mode, so the wands and blasters are great for PVE.
  • Switch any weapon off (/weapons disable flashbang): it won't fire, hit or craft until you switch it back on.
  • Crafting on or off: every weapon has a recipe, or turn crafting off and hand them out yourself. It works straight away, with no reload.
  • Hand out kits: /weapons give @a all, or just blasters, melee, throwables, wands, or one weapon.
  • Settings kept in config/pcaweapons/settings.json, and every change goes to the server log.

Safe by design

  • Nothing breaks, burns or griefs blocks. The lightning is for show, the fireballs never light blocks, and grenades don't explode.
  • Soft landings: after a bubble, a slime grenade, a hammer bonk or a boxing glove punch, the next big fall doesn't hurt.
  • A gentler flashbang for anyone who finds bright flashes uncomfortable: each player can switch on reducedFlash in their client config, and the screen only goes partly grey. The flash never flickers.

Requirements and dependencies

No other mods are required.

Mod
PCA Perms 0.1.9 or newer Optional Its teacher group can manage weapons (pcaweapons.manage) without being ops
PCA Auction Optional Storage units sometimes have a weapon inside, with the best ones in jackpot units
  • Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge 47 or newer
  • Install on the server and in players' games.

Permissions: pcaweapons.manage (change the rules and hand weapons out: ops by default). Everyone can use the weapons they have, and anyone can check the rules with /weapons info.

Standalone

PCA Weapons doesn't need the Pixel Creators Academy server or any PCA service. It works on any Forge 1.20.1 server, with or without the other PCA mods.

Getting started

  1. Install PCA Weapons on the server and in everyone's game.
  2. Pick the rules: /weapons pvp tag (the default), off or full.
  3. Hand weapons out with /weapons give @a all, or take them from the PCA Weapons creative tab, or let students craft them.

Commands: /weapons info (everyone), and for teachers /weapons pvp off | tag | full, /weapons crafting on | off, /weapons disable flashbang, /weapons enable all, /weapons give @a blasters, /weapons set pvpdamage 0.5, /weapons set flashrange 16.
