Description
Penchant - NeoForge Port
A rework of enchanting, centered around leveling up enchantments through usage.
This is an unofficial NeoForge port of the original Penchant mod by ThePotatoArchivist.
All original design and credit go to them - this port simply brings the mod to NeoForge using native APIs, aiming for full feature parity.

⚔️ What is Penchant?
Tired of gambling your XP away at the enchanting table? Penchant flips enchanting on its head:
- Enchantments start at level 1 and level up as you use the item. Mine ore, fight mobs, block hits, wear armor - your gear grows stronger the more you use it.
- Pick your enchantment with a reworked enchanting table menu instead of rolling the dice.
- Extract enchantments back out of your gear at a grindstone.
- Progress tooltips - hold a key (default Left Ctrl) to see how close each enchantment is to leveling up.
- New advancements for building libraries, enchanting, and collecting every enchantment.
🧩 Modular by design
- Durability Rework - reworks Unbreaking & Mending around leveling (on by default)
- Bookshelf Placement - more lenient bookshelf placement (on by default)
- Table Rework - the custom enchanting table + advancements (on by default)
- No Anvil Books - prevents combining enchanted books on an anvil (on by default)
- Loot Rework - reworks where enchantment books appear in loot & on mobs (on by default)
- Guaranteed Drops - guarantees certain enchanted drops (on by default)
- Reduced Curses - makes curses appear less often (off by default)
- Randomized Librarians - Librarian villagers sell a random enchanted book on each purchase, instead of one fixed trade for life (off by default)
✅ Works with other enchantment mods
Penchant is tag-driven and data-driven, not hardcoded to vanilla enchantments:
- Enchantments added by other mods level up through usage automatically - no patch needed.
- Fine-tune behavior with tags: `#penchant:no_leveling` (apply at full level, never level up) and `#penchant:disabled` (hide from the enchanting table).
⚠️ Mods that add enchantments are fully compatible. Mods that replace the enchanting/anvil mechanics themselves may conflict.
🔌 Optional integration
Item Descriptions adds descriptive tooltips to Penchant's enchantments if installed. Completely optional, not bundled.
