Based on the pickcrafter game (planning to add every pickaxe at least, and every material at best). Well balanced. (not any new tool yet, just pickaxes, but I'm planning to add them).

sapphire is easy to find and is like an iron pickaxe, but can't mine diamond and can only be found in cold biomes, so probably you'll keep using the iron pickaxe.
obsidian has high durability and enchantability

glowstone is like iron but can mine ruby

glass pickaxe gives you glass

pumpkin pickaxe gives you candy

I could go on forever, every pickaxe has something in to offer you if you get them in the right moment.
