About

Description

Power Shrooms

Mario-style power-ups, a full Mario-inspired moveset, a five-level underground dungeon, and an entire Mushroom Kingdom to explore — plus three extra dimensions, 100+ creatures and a dozen bosses.

Power Shrooms started as a handful of 3D mushrooms and grew into a big love letter to Mario platformers for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1. Eat a mushroom, put on Mario's cap, jump down a warp pipe, and go stomp some Goombas.

Requires: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, GeckoLib 4.8+ Optional: Cobblemon (Pokémon size features), Lootr (per-player loot), Reactive Music, Trials (copper blocks in the dungeon), PokeRider, GottaCatchemall

Power-ups

Mushrooms and flowers give you their power when you use them. Shift + right-click places them as decoration instead.

Item Effect
Super Mushroom Grow bigger and hit harder. The next hit shrinks you instead of hurting.
1-Up Mushroom A row of extra green hearts that absorb damage first.
Poison Mushroom Counts as a hit — shrinks you if you're Super, otherwise poisons you.
Mini Mushroom Tiny, fast, and a very high jumper.
Mega Mushroom Giant for 30 seconds: smash soft blocks, take a quarter of the damage.
Fire Flower Throw bouncing fireballs.
Ice Flower Throw iceballs that freeze enemies for 5 seconds (bosses only stop for a moment).
Bubble Flower Blow bubbles that trap small enemies and turn them into coins.
Super Leaf Tanuki tail: whip nearby enemies, flutter in the air and glide.
Propeller Mushroom Spin about 7 blocks upwards, then float back down.
Super Star Invincibility and speed with a rainbow glow, its own music, and heavy damage to anything you touch.
Bowser's Shell Chestplate with built-in thorns, fire and lava immunity, and a mightier ground pound.
Wing Cap Triple jump to take off, then fly wherever you look. It wears out while you fly.
Mario's outfit Gloves, overalls and boots with Mario's model.

Any power-up shrinks back to Super with a hit, and back to normal with another.

The Mario moveset

Put on Mario's Cap (or Luigi's, Wario's or Waluigi's) and you can:

  • Triple jump, long jump, backflip, wall jump and wall slide
  • Ground pound to smash through blocks, bounce off enemies and trigger ? blocks below
  • Grab and throw small creatures, shells and Bob-ombs — or grab Bowser by the tail when he's tired, spin him and throw him into one of the bombs in his arena
  • Jump about 33% higher and fall up to ~7 blocks without taking damage
  • Hit ? blocks and ! switch blocks from below

Everything is tunable from the in-game config screen (/psconfig or Mods → Power Shrooms → Config), including a slider for every jump value.

Level blocks

Warp pipes (enter by crouching), ? blocks, coins (100 coins = 1-Up), cannons (crouch on top, or send a redstone pulse), checkpoint flags, jump panels and POW blocks. Plus the blocks that make real platforming levels:

  • ON/OFF switch with red and blue blocks that swap solidity
  • Rotating blocks, one-way walls, semisolid and shrinking platforms
  • Springs, note blocks and jump spheres
  • Hundreds of decorative blocks for building: crystals, candy cane, seabed, volcano, haunted wood, bronze and many more

The Underworld Pipe dungeon

El Tubo del Inframundo is a 128×104×128 dungeon hidden underground, five levels deep: a real maze, flooded mines, a lava lake, a fortress with Thwomps and Boos, and Bowser himself at the bottom. It's protected against shortcuts until you beat him, drops Bowser's Shell and the Super Star, and the purple pipe at the end opens the way to the Mushroom Kingdom.

The Mushroom Kingdom

A whole new dimension with ten biomes: rolling hills, giant mushrooms, Goomba Woods, Pipe Rock Plateau, Cheep Cheep Beach, Dry Dry Desert, the haunted Ruins… and villages of Toad Houses, Yoshi's House, Peach's Castle and floating sky islands.

Friendly faces

  • Toads wander the Kingdom with tips for you.
  • Captain Toad waits by the first pipe and runs a short tutorial that ends with Mario's overalls, gloves, boots and a cap.
  • Toadette the shepherdess lost her sleepy sheep — bring her five for a reward.
  • Caged Toads in the fortresses open once the guards are gone, and give you a Mushroom Key for a Toad's chest.

Dungeons with bosses

  • Bowser's Castle — a second, original castle with its own rematch altar
  • Larry's Citadel — a 5×5 grid of rooms, linked with warp pipes
  • Goomboss's Tree — climb the trunk branch by branch
  • Airships with Larry or Lemmy aboard — and Bowser Jr.'s airship
  • Boom Boom's Fort, the King Bob-omb Tower, buried dungeons, and the pink-gem room

Dungeons stay protected until their guardians are defeated. Chests give per-player loot with Lootr.

Three extra dimensions

Find a coloured warp pipe shrine in the Kingdom:

  • The Dark World — floating islands of gloomrock above the void, haunted trees and bone pillars, and the Dark Knight's Keep guarded by Larry the Dark Knight.
  • World 2: Dry Dry Desert — endless dunes, quicksand pits that slow and sink you, and the Desert Pyramid.
  • The Corrupted Dimension — total silence, corrupted blocks, spikes that bite, and a distant laugh. Its pipe stays sealed until someone survives MX in your world.

Each dimension has its own arrival platform with a pipe back home.

Enemies and bosses

Over 90 entity types, all with GeckoLib models and animations and their own AI — not reskinned zombies:

  • Classics: Goombas (red, bone, big, mega, winged), Koopas and rolling shells, Piranha Plants (fire, elite, melon), Bullet Bills, Thwomps, Boos, Chain Chomp, Hammer Bros, Fire Bros
  • Underground & desert: Bob-ombs, Dry Bones, Bony Beetles, Monty Moles, Pokeys, Cobrats, Fire Snakes, Spinies
  • Sea & sky: Cheep Cheeps (and their deep, winged and shoaling cousins), Bloopers, Lakitu throwing Spiny eggs, Fuzzies, Podoboos, the giant three-piece Unagi
  • Brutes & oddballs: Rex, Chargin' Chuck, Spear Guy (with a shield that cracks), Birdo, Cataquacks, Hoppycat, Thwimps, Maw-Maw, Shellslug, Skedaddler, Mad Piano
  • Bosses: Bowser, King Bob-omb, Larry Koopa, Lemmy Koopa (balancing on his circus ball), Goomboss, Bowser Jr., Boom Boom, Larry the Dark Knight, Mecha-Koopas
  • Creepy extras: MX will chase you once per world — and something starts watching you afterwards…
  • Critters: Sleepy Sheep, little birds, rainbow fairies, Money Bags and a seasonal Gifthopper
  • Koopa the Quick will race you across the Kingdom for a Super Star

Pokémon size (optional, needs Cobblemon)

Wild Pokémon spawn from 0.3× to 3× size. Feed a Pokémon a Super Mushroom to grow it, or a Mini Mushroom to shrink it. /pokesize for operators.

Compatibility

  • Works alongside Epic Fight, Leawind's Third Person, PokeRider (flight is blocked inside protected dungeons) and GottaCatchemall (captured bosses follow you and fight).
  • Reactive Music users get dungeon and boss music cues out of the box.
  • Players can disable the moveset, the animations, and the boss music from the config.

What comes from Super Mario Mania, and what's new

Ported from Super Mario Mania (art and level design; the behaviour is rewritten in this mod): the models, animations, textures and sounds of the enemies and blocks, the terrain and structures of World One, the biomes and noise of the dimensions, and the templates of the dungeons, citadel, tree and airships.

Made for this fork: the moveset and the caps, the mushrooms and their rules, warp pipes and the level blocks' mechanics, the Underworld Pipe dungeon, Bowser's Castle and the Bowser loot, dungeon protection, the dimension shrines and arrivals, the Dark Knight's Keep and the Desert Pyramid, grab and throw, the visible Super Star, the Pokémon size feature, and all of the code and AI.

Mixed: an enemy with a Mario Mania model and our own behaviour is just that — model and animations from Mario Mania, behaviour written here.
