Description

Your death becomes a boss
When you die, your gear doesn't hit the floor. It rises as a Remnant: a hostile echo of you, wearing your armor and swinging your weapon. Beat it and you get everything back, including your XP. Die again before you do, and the next one is stronger.
Remnants of the Past is an adventure mod about what you leave behind. It adds bosses with telegraphed movesets, graveyards and crypts to explore, and a soul-crafting progression that runs from your first death to the Soul King.
☠ The Remnant
- Holds your whole inventory and all your experience. No despawn timer, and it's immune to lava and explosions.
- Kneels where you fell until you come close, so you choose when the fight starts.
- As strong as you were. If you die naked with a wooden sword, you get a Faint Echo. Enchanted netherite gives you a Great Echo with three phases, mirror decoys and a full moveset.
- Every strike is wound up before it lands. A poise bar rewards pressure, and a perfect shield parry staggers it.
- 10% of Remnants are Empowered. Beat one and it reforges your weapon into a Spectral weapon (+1 to every enchantment) and drops a Remnant Crown.
- Wait too long and carrion crows gather over it and start stealing your loot.
🕯 Path of the Soul
Every Remnant you lay to rest earns Soul Resonance. Five ranks unlock permanent gifts:
- respawn vengeance
- soul bond
- keep your weapon
- survive a killing blow once a day
- keep your armor
⚰ Graves, crypts and the library
- Forgotten Graves are hidden under the overworld. A Soul Dowser clicks faster as you close in. Dig one up and a Burial Casket climbs out with an old adventurer's belongings. Sometimes its owner climbs out too.
- Forgotten Remnants wander at night and take on their biome. Drowned ones throw a chain harpoon, Frozen ones breathe frost, and Sandy ones burrow and resurface behind you.
- The Ossuary: a crypt complex deep underground, home to the Crypt Warden, the Grave Mimic (never trust an urn) and the wailing Keener.
- The Ruined Belfry and its Night of Memory event.
- The Library and its boss, the Archivist, who remembers every death.
👑 The Soul King
A three-headed, four-armed lich with crystal wards and three phases. To summon him, build the circle (a Spirit Offering Table with four Soul Pedestals) and offer a Condensed Soul. He drops the Soul King's Arsenal: one weapon with four forms (sword, bow, trident and mace), each with its own ability.
Every boss has its own boss bar and its own music theme.
⚒ Soul crafting
Soul Forge, Soul Crucible (a rhythm-based forge where forge quality matters), Reflecting Pool, Ritual Hammer multiblocks, Soul Anchor (choose where your Remnant rises), Soul Ward, and the Phylactery (keeps your inventory through three deaths). There's also the Mourner's armour set with Ghost Step, the Bone Chakram with biome inlays, the Shroud Glider, Soul Lantern, Soul Tether, Decoy Echo, Soul Astrolabe and an anchor network.
📖 The Soul Codex
An in-game guide with chapters, recipes, live 3D portraits (your own ghost included), your Path of the Soul progress and a Chronicle of your deaths. You get it on first join.
Requirements
- Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric Loader 0.16+, Fabric API, Java 21
- Install it on both the client and the server for multiplayer.
- Languages: English and Russian
Config
config/remnants_of_the_past.json is created on first launch. It covers keepInventory behaviour, echo strength and
scaling, poise, XP keeping, Soul Resonance, Empowered chance, spawn weights, grave rarity, boss health and damage,
screen shake and more. Run /remnants reload to apply changes without restarting.
Compatibility
- Built on Fabric API events. A few small client mixins handle screen shake, the custom boss bars and boss music, and one server mixin keeps
explosions out of sealed crypt vaults.
Set
screenShake: 0to turn off the shake. - Respects
keepInventory. Totems of Undying still work, and Curse of Vanishing still vanishes. - Gravestone/corpse mods do the same job and will conflict. Use one or the other.
