ShowCase: (1) Best new magic mod! Rite Of Returning 8.0.0 Showcase - YouTube
Rite of Returning
is a dark magic progression mod for Minecraft Forge 1.20.1 focused on death, undeath, soulfire, shadow magic, rituals, spirit forms, lich transformation, custom weapons, soul corruption, and dangerous supernatural mobs.

This mod adds a complete undead-themed progression path where players can return from death, gather souls, perform powerful rituals, command dark forces, and eventually become a lich. It also adds new blocks, weapons, mobs, biomes, effects, advancements, and compatibility systems built around a dark fantasy survival experience.

This added a whole set of systems built off of the Iron's Spells systems!

Core Theme

Rite of Returning is built around the idea that death is not the end. Players can become spirits, return from undeath, collect souls, unlock forbidden rituals, and bend shadow and soulfire to their will.

The mod is meant for darker fantasy modpacks, RPG survival packs, magic progression packs, undead-themed worlds, and boss-like player transformation systems.

Main Features

Undead and Spirit Progression

Players can move through dark supernatural states connected to death, spirit form, undeath, and resurrection.

The mod includes systems for:

  • Spirit form

  • Undead form

  • Returning from death

  • Soul tracking

  • Soul-based progression

  • Ritual-based transformation

  • Lich progression

Players who complete key progression steps can unlock new powers, advancements, and soul-based mechanics.

The Lich Ritual

The Lich Ritual is one of the main endgame systems in Rite of Returning.

To begin the ritual, the player must build a ritual structure using:

  • Ritual Tower

  • Ritual Spires

  • Ritual Tips

  • Darkrock

  • Four surrounding ritual spires

  • A central ritual tower

The ritual requires sacrifices and powerful items before it can begin. Once activated, the ritual enters a 3-minute startup phase.

During this time:

  • A boss bar timer appears.

  • The Darkrock dome slowly builds around the ritual.

  • The ground corrupts into Shadow Grass.

  • Soul Seekers attack in waves.

  • Dark particles travel from the outer spires to the central tower.

  • The area becomes darker and more dangerous.

  • Nearby mobs are pulled into the ritual.

When the ritual completes, the player unlocks the advancement:

And Death's Life Begins

The ritual consumes powerful items and instantly transforms the player into Lich Form.

Lich Form

Lich Form is a powerful undead transformation with major strengths and weaknesses.

Liches gain:

  • 3 rows of hearts

  • 60 max health

  • Immunity to burning/fire damage

  • Soul-based aura effects

  • Shadow ally summoning

  • Undead mob rallying

  • Dark area corruption effects

  • Torch-breaking darkness aura

Liches can still take normal damage from non-burning sources.

While in Lich Form:

  • Nearby torches and light sources are destroyed.

  • Nearby entities receive Darkness and Weakness.

  • Undead and shadow mobs rally to the lich.

  • Shadow Spirits assist the lich.

  • Soul Seekers flee from the lich.

  • Endermen become aggressive toward the lich.

  • Passive mobs flee in terror.

  • Spider Pals become hostile toward liches.

  • Armor cannot be worn.

  • The Crown of the Spider cannot be worn.

When a lich is attacked, it can summon friendly Shadow Spirits for a short time to defend it.

Ritual Corruption

The Lich Ritual corrupts the world around it.

The corruption:

  • Spreads in vein-like patterns.

  • Converts up to 75% of the ritual area into Shadow Grass.

  • Spreads over the full ritual startup.

  • Stores the original ground blocks.

  • Restores the ground over time after the ritual collapses.

When the center Ritual Tower is broken, the ritual collapses. The Darkrock dome, ritual spires, ritual tips, and corrupted ground begin breaking/restoring over time.

New Blocks

Rite of Returning adds several dark ritual and biome blocks, including:

  • Ritual Tower

  • Ritual Spire
