MOD Still WIP - Bugs might occur!  - This mod is only on CurseForge. Please do not reupload it!

We are many thinking the default explosion in Minecraft is underwhelming, especially when the modpack transforms the server into a warzone. Make your warcrimes more impactful with this mod (which is my first one btw!!).

Savapeter upgrades vanilla explosion visuals and sounds with more immersive and realistic features. This mod works without 3D and uses some tricks to make explosions enjoyable without sacrificing too much performance.

Specs are adjustable to your preferences!

Features

Fireball flash : stock-footage explosion animation at the epicenter (six variants, picked at random), sized to the blast's power tier.

Ground shockwave : a disc of dust/smoke expand outward along the terrain, following slopes and stairs, scaled to the explosion's radius.

More smoke : black smoke on the edge of the blast and rising from the crater.

Falling incandescent debris : a few particles are ejected from the blast, emiting smoke.

Dynamic light flash : a cluster of temporary light sources is placed around the epicenter, scaled to the explosion's power, and fades out over about two seconds, actually illuminating nearby terrain. Most noticeable at night.

Camera feedback : screen shake and a look-direction-weighted screen flash, both scaling with the explosion's power and distance. Standing too close to the blast will give you temporal blindness.

Sound system : six size tiers (mini to gigantic) of custom explosion sounds, with:

  • a distance-delayed variant (sound reaches the listener after a delay based on distance, like real sound travel)
  • a muffled/reverbed "far" variant past 64 blocks
  • an extra long-range variant for gigantic explosions, audible out to roughly 1000+ blocks
  • a cave reverb variant when underground with no sky access
  • separate on-water/underwater rumble and splash sounds

I'm open to feedback! As I said it's my first mod and I will happily take your suggestions, including mod compatibility! Thanks for the support!

Compatibility

  Status
Superb Warfare 0.8.9 Optional, compatible
Sound Physics Remastered 1.4.10 Optional, partially compatible

Superb Warfare compatibility (optional) : if Superb Warfare is installed, its weapon explosions use the same visual/audio effects, including a dedicated "mini" sound tier matching its smallest weapons. No effect if it isn't installed.

Sound Physics Remastered partial compatibility (optional) : if Sound Physics Remastered is installed, explosions might sound extra muffled. I will provide additional support later.

For other mods using the vanilla explosion : this mod will probably work.

Configuration

Each part of the mod can be toggled or tuned independently in the config screen:

  • Separate toggles for sounds, visuals, screen shake, and screen flash
  • Particle density multiplier (scales particle counts without changing size, speed, or behavior)
  • Screen shake / screen flash intensity multipliers
  • Speed-of-sound delay toggle
  • Superb Warfare override toggle

Requirements

  • Minecraft 1.21.1
  • NeoForge 21.1.211+
  • Client+server mod, all players need it installed for the full effect, including the dynamic light and shockwave

Planned features

  • Additional camera/haptic feedback options
  • More environment impact
  • Maybe better animations?
  • Water splashes animations
  • Support for more Minecraft and NeoForge versions

Changelog

1.0.5 - Sound Fixes

  • Replaced the medium explosion sound set with new recordings for a punchier, clearer blast.
  • Fixed the mini and small explosion sound tiers being swapped: mini was sounding bigger than small. They now match their intended size.

1.0.4 - Blindness Fix

  • Fixed explosion blindness occasionally getting stuck past when its own timer reached zero, instead of clearing as it should.

1.0.3 - Bug fixes

  • Explosions that don't destroy blocks (Wind Charges, Breeze wind charges) now only get a small ground shockwave instead of the full fireball/smoke/debris treatment and crater smoke. Explosions that are blocked from destroying anything by their surroundings (TNT underwater, against blast-resistant blocks) are unaffected and still get the full treatment.
  • Fixed proximity blindness getting perpetually reapplied when hit by repeated Wind Charges/Breeze attacks - it no longer applies to non-destructive explosions at all.

1.0.2 - Crater Smoke

  • Craters keep venting a few smoke puffs for several seconds after the blast, rising from the actual crater floor (toggleable separately from the rest of the visuals).
  • Increased debris and smoke donut particle counts for a fuller-looking explosion.
  • Smoking debris lingers on the ground longer before burning out.
  • Reduced the default shockwave smoke particle count.

1.0.1 - Balancing

  • Screen shake now delays to match when the explosion's sound would actually reach you (real speed-of-sound timing), instead of firing instantly on detonation.
  • Screen shake's distance falloff is now logarithmic instead of linear - it drops off quickly right at the epicenter so it doesn't feel overwhelming up close, then tails off gently out to its max range.
  • Screen shake's max felt range doubled, so bigger explosions can still be felt from further away, while still scaling with blast radius.
  • Reduced the dynamic light flash's reach on the largest explosions - it was extending further than intended.
  • Proximity blindness when caught within an explosion's blast radius.

1.0.0 - Initial Release

  • Standalone NeoForge mod overhauling vanilla explosion sound and visuals: fireball flash, smoke, falling incandescent debris, ground shockwave, camera shake/flash, dynamic light flash, and tiered/distance-aware explosion sounds.
  • Superb Warfare compatibility.
