Description

Skinwalkers: Borrowed Skin

Something in the woods is learning.

You stop walking. One more footstep lands behind you. An animal waits at the edge of the trees. Its head turns before its body. By the third night, you know it was never just an animal.

Borrowed Skin is a single-player survival horror mod for Minecraft Java 1.21.1 / Fabric. Create a normal world and play. No custom map is required.

Three nights of growing dread

  • First night: distant cries, small disturbances and an occasional watcher.
  • Second night: closer disguises, strange sounds and the first glimpse beneath the skin.
  • Third night onward: stalking can become a real, lethal hunt after a warning sequence.

Events have pauses and cooldowns. The world remembers what you have experienced. Contextual English chat, spatial audio, fading fog and subtle visual effects support the encounters rather than filling every moment with noise.

The creature

The skinwalker wears sheep, wolf and wanderer disguises. Its revealed form has an original 30-bone, 93-cuboid model with a moving jaw, long fingers, ribs and layered hide. Ten animation clips cover idle behavior, animal movement, stalking, revealing, searching, low galloping, attacking and retreating.

During a hunt it follows sight, movement noise and nearby interactions. It can hurt and kill you. Losing sight forces it to search the last known position. Closed shelters and the equipment you prepare can save your life.

Places that remember

Explore eight major landmark types: Watching Stones, Hollow Well, Nameless Graves, Silent Chapel, Survey Tower, Ashen Camp, Observer's House and Shed-Skin Den. Four smaller wilderness traces hide further supplies and clues.

Recover twelve English witness records, inspect hidden caches and listen for each location's night scene. A well can answer. An empty tower can sound occupied. A deserted house can knock from within.

New major landmarks stay at least 512 blocks apart. Minor finds keep at least 160 blocks between each other and 256 blocks from major landmarks. Terrain can reject placement, so discovery is not guaranteed beside spawn.

Prepare, escape, return

  • Ashen Lantern: hold its beam on the creature to reveal and repel it.
  • Signal Flare: an emergency burst that drives back a visible pursuer.
  • Echo Lure: a false footstep to distract the hunt.
  • Threshold Ward: a rechargeable defense for your shelter.
  • Mask Carver: a close-range tool that forces retreat.
  • Banishment Ash: expose and weaken the creature, then earn three quiet nights.
  • Field Journal: illustrated notes that unlock as you learn.
  • Surveyor's Compass: find witness stones in nearby loaded terrain.

All eight equipment recipes use the ordinary crafting table. A dedicated Creative tab includes the items, records, spawn egg and an eleven-scene Director's Totem for previewing sounds, disguises and encounters.

Installation

Requires Minecraft 1.21.1, Java 21, Fabric Loader 0.16.14+, Fabric API and GeckoLib 4.7.7+ for Fabric 1.21.1 (GeckoLib 5 is not supported).

Install the mod and dependencies, then create a Survival world on Easy, Normal or Hard. The director starts automatically. All mod text is English.

Settings and compatibility

Configure sound volume, fog, vignette, event frequency, hunt duration and worldgen spacing in config/borrowed-skin.json. This release targets single-player; dedicated-server multiplayer is not supported. Creative previews do not harm the player.

Tested with Sodium 0.6.13 + Iris 1.8.8, shaders disabled. Other shader packs and arbitrary modpacks have not been verified. No external shader pack is required.

Updating an existing world

New landmarks generate only in new chunks. Version 1.1.1 automatically updates the old default placement settings, but does not relocate existing monuments. Explore previously ungenerated terrain or start a new world for the sparser distribution.
