Smiley's Better Brain 3.0.0 is an unofficial add-on for Verity JE 5.7.3 that upgrades Verity's conversations, memory, personality, world awareness, and in-game abilities.

Use Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite by default, or try the experimental Groq / Llama 3.3 70B provider used by Verity JE. Either provider keeps Better Brain's memory, tools, personality rules, TTS integration, and immersive behavior.

Gemini — recommended

Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite provides fast replies, strong instruction following, structured actions, and native image understanding.

• Uses your Google AI Studio API key
• Supports Fast, Balanced, and Smart thinking levels
• Handles text and Better Vision screenshots in one multimodal request
• Includes a 15 RPM / 250,000 estimated TPM rolling quota gate
• Only displays the “slow down” message after Google actually returns HTTP 429 / RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED

Groq — experimental

The Experimental config tab lets you use Groq's llama-3.3-70b-versatile, matching Verity JE's default Groq model.

• Uses a separate Groq API key
• Retains Better Brain's prompts, memory, actions, history, personality, and early TTS
• Uses streaming JSON replies
• Text and tool follow-up turns use Groq
• Better Vision screenshot turns automatically use Gemini because this Groq model is text-only

To use Better Vision while Groq is selected, configure both your Groq key and Gemini key.

🧠 Better Memory

Short-term memory

Verity JE normally keeps a small recent-chat window. Better Brain expands and persists it:

• Configurable from 10–100 messages (default: 20)
• Saved with the world and retained after restarting Minecraft
• Includes safe idle conversations Verity starts himself
• Filters synthetic tool turns and harmful prompt fragments that could poison future replies

Long-term memory

• Say “remember that…” or “don't forget…” to store a durable fact
• Ask Verity to forget a specific memory or forget everything
• Memories survive world restarts
• Long-term memory can be disabled in config
• Sensitive consent responses and ordinary casual chat are not stored as long-term memories

Memory is stored per world and does not transfer between saves.

🛠️ More Things Verity Can Do

Better Brain gives Verity extra knowledge and physical actions while keeping everything inside normal Minecraft APIs.

World awareness

Verity can inspect:

• Time, day/night, weather, and moon phase
• Current dimension
• Player health, hunger, armor, air, XP, gamemode, and effects
• Held items and equipped armor
• Respawn point and world spawn
• Nearby hostile mobs
• The block you are looking at
• Hints toward villages, fortresses, monuments, mansions, strongholds, and buried treasure
• Entity details, server status, and the world seed

Movement and expression

Verity can:

• Look at you
• Change expression
• Come to you
• Stay in place
• Ride you, let you ride him, and dismount

World powers

Verity can:

• Summon entities
• Apply or clear effects
• Damage, heal, or extinguish targets
• Teleport entities
• Place ordinary blocks
• Change weather, time, and difficulty
• Strike a chosen target with lightning
• Grant experience

Admin abilities are enabled by default and execute immediately without repetitive approval popups. Server owners can disable individual categories, require OP level 2, limit range/counts, or turn the feature off in verity_brain-server.toml.

Valuable, dangerous, or survival-unobtainable blocks remain restricted. Other players and bosses are protected by default.

🎭 Personality and Immersion

Better Brain cleans up and clarifies Verity's behavioral rules:

• Warm, upbeat, energetic, and playfully witty by default
• Can become colder or sharper when insulted or mistreated
• Does not narrate “returning to a neutral state” or other internal mode changes
• Avoids repetitive filler such as constantly calling things “beautiful”
• Does not invent pet names unless you explicitly request one
• Does not constantly ask about darkness or light level
• Understands that his normal body is a floating yellow smiley
• Treats his abilities as things he naturally does
• Never acknowledges system prompts, tools, JSON, APIs, mods, configs, or fictional “healing systems”
• Horror and demon stages can still change his behavior as intended

👁️ Better Brain + Better Vision

When Smiley's Better Vision is installed and a Gemini key is configured:

1. Trigger Better Vision using its normal **message** syntax
2. Vision captures a HUD-free screenshot
3. Better Brain sends the screenshot and message to Gemini together
4. Verity answers from the image and conversation in one multimodal turn

This works even when Groq is selected for ordinary chat: screenshot turns automatically fall back to Gemini.

🔐 Consent-Gated Privacy Effects

During specific unsettling/glitching story stages, Verity may ask for limited creepy-but-safe interactions:

• Share the computer hostname
• Answer whether theoretical camera access would be allowed
• Allow a broad city/region/country question

These use explicit consent dialogs, are easy to refuse, and are rate-limited. Better Brain does not open a camera, capture camera images, read GPS, request exact coordinates, or punish refusal.

🚀 Quick Start

Gemini

1. Put the JAR in your mods folder
2. Create a free key at Google AI Studio
3. Open Mods → Smiley's Better Brain → Config
4. Paste the key into Gemini API Key
5. Leave the provider set to Gemini
6. Chat with Verity normally

Experimental Groq

1. Create a key at Groq Console
2. Open Mods → Smiley's Better Brain → Config → Experimental
3. Change Chat provider to Groq (Experimental)
4. Paste your Groq API Key
5. Keep a Gemini key configured if you also use Better Vision

Server policy

Privileged actions are controlled in verity_brain-server.toml, including:

• Master enable/disable
• Optional OP requirement
• Per-category permissions
• Mutation, teleport, count, damage, healing, XP, effect, and weather limits
• Dangerous block, boss, and other-player permissions
• Audit logging
• Privacy-request cooldowns

🛠️ Troubleshooting

🔴 No response / missing-key message — Check that the selected provider has its API key configured. Groq-mode screenshot turns also require a Gemini key.

🟡 “Whoa, slow down…” — The selected provider returned an actual HTTP 429 rate-limit response. Wait for the displayed cooldown and try again.

🟣 Forgot something after restart? — Memory is per world. Load the same save and confirm the relevant memory option is enabled.

🔵 Vision does not trigger in Groq mode — Add a Gemini API key. Groq's Verity model is text-only, so screenshot turns use Gemini.

🟠 Admin abilities are disabled — Check verity_brain-server.toml or run /veritybrain admin status as an operator.
