SQUID GAME – VOTING BOARD
==============================================
The voting board occupies the far end of the chamber like a permanent fixture of the world, as though the room itself was constructed to accommodate it. The wall behind it is reinforced and darker than the rest, its surface unmarked except for the board’s presence. Even when the room is empty, the board remains.
It does not power down.
It does not sleep.
Its surface is smooth and opaque, absorbing light instead of reflecting it cleanly. Torches cast distorted halos across its face. Movement appears delayed in its reflection, as if the board considers what it sees before showing it back to you.
At the center of the board, two symbols rest in absolute stillness.
One glows green.
One glows red.
They do not blink.
They do not pulse.
They do not react to proximity.
They exist as facts.
No instructions are displayed. No explanation is offered. The board assumes understanding, and it is rarely wrong. Those who approach it know, instinctively, that the symbols represent a pause in the game — a moment where progression hesitates and choice is permitted.
Standing near the board changes the atmosphere of the room. Sound dulls. The air feels denser. Movements slow, even when no one acknowledges the reason.
The green symbol implies continuation. Acceptance of what has already been endured, and of what has yet to come. It offers no reassurance. It only promises that the game will not stop.
The red symbol implies an ending. Not a reward. Not a victory. Only the cessation of movement. What follows is deliberately undefined.
The board does not rush players.
It does not pressure them openly.
It simply waits.
Time stretches here, becoming vague and uncomfortable. Without a visible measure, hesitation grows heavier with every passing moment. Every glance at the board feels meaningful. Every step away from it feels deliberate.
The board has seen countless players stand before it. Some confident. Some terrified. Some pretending not to care. It has never reacted differently to any of them.
It has never needed to.
When a decision is finally reached, the board does not celebrate. It does not condemn. The symbols dim slightly, acknowledging that consensus has been achieved.
What happens next is inevitable.
The board remains.
