Systems Reworked: Hunger & Health

Hunger and Health should each mean something on their own. This mod splits them into two independent systems with a single, clear job each: Meats heal Health and Carbs restore Hunger, simple. Passive regeneration is gone entirely, there's no hidden stats, no single dominant food, and no one item that trivialises everything else.

The Problem This Solves

Vanilla's food system is secretly one system pretending to be two. Health only regenerates because your Hunger bar is full enough, so in practice every food item is just a regen trigger and the best regen trigger wins. Cooked beef/porkchops do it most efficiently, so the optimal play is always a cow/hoglin farm. The rest of the food roster is largely irrelevant and never interacted with beyond this.

On top of that, Saturation means the actual state of your Hunger bar is invisible to you. You're managing a stat you can't see.

This mod fixes both problems at once: cut the systems apart so each has a distinct job, strip out the hidden number so what you see is what you manage, and make sure no single food item is the obvious answer. The result is a gameplay loop that is both easier to understand and more satisfying to engange with.

How It Works Now

The Health Bar:

Health no longer regenerates passively, under any circumstance, on any difficulty. The only ways to restore it are eating; a type of Meat, a Mixed category item (golden carrot, golden apple, etc.), or drinking a healing/regen potion.

If your Hunger bar hits zero, all healing from food is halved. Potions ignore this penalty entirely, making Brewing the reliable fallback when you're caught out of both food types. An empty Hunger bar no longer deals damage and won't kill you, however, it still locks your sprint.

The Hunger Bar:

Hunger is restored only by Carbs or Mixed foods. It drains from the same actions as vanilla; sprinting, jumping, mining, but now drains the visible Hunger bar directly instead of a hidden Saturation buffer first. At 6 points or below, you can no longer sprint, identical to vanilla's threshold.

Saturation: Gone

Saturation is removed entirely rather than rebalanced. Food is now described by exactly two visible numbers (Hearts and Hunger Points), instead of three, one of which was invisible. The result is a HUD where a new player can look at what they're holding and correctly understand what it does before they eat it.

Food Categories

Meat — Heals Health Only

To cut inventory bloat, Beef, Porkchop, Mutton, and Rabbit are merged into two generic items: Raw Meat and Cooked Meat. Each animal still has its own drop table and byproducts, their identity just no longer lives in a separate food item that behaves identically to four others.

New additions: Goat, Llama, and Polar Bear now drop meat on death. Polar Bear yields more to offset hunting a mob that turns hostile when provoked.

Item Heals Notes
Cooked Meat 3 Hearts The reliable staple. Cow, pig, sheep, rabbit, goat, hoglin, polar bear. Cows, drop more meat but pigs are now much easier to breed, especially early on - which will you choose?
Raw Meat 1 Heart Cooking is a clear upgrade, not a requirement.
Cooked Chicken 2 Hearts Below red meat to offset how cheap and fast chickens are to breed.
Raw Chicken 1 Heart Chance of the Hunger effect on eating, unchanged from vanilla.
Cooked Fish 2 Hearts Cheapest reliable farm — no breeding required, just a fishing rod.
Raw Fish 1 Heart
Tropical Fish 1 Heart Not cookable, unchanged from vanilla.
Pufferfish 1 Heart Inflicts Poison, Nausea, and Hunger on eating, unchanged from vanilla.
Rotten Flesh 1 Heart High chance of the Hunger effect. Last resort, not a farmable strategy.
Spider Eye 1 Heart Inflicts Poison, unchanged from vanilla. Brewing ingredient first, food second.

Carbs — Restores Hunger Only

Carbs differentiate from each other through consumption speed tiers rather than all collapsing onto whichever restores the most points. Hunger values mostly match vanilla with some buffs to things like stews which can now stack to 16 (and the bowl is consumed).

Item Hunger Speed Notes
Sweet Berries 1 Snack (0.8s) Early-biome bridge food.
Glow Berries 1 Snack (0.8s) Cave-biased equivalent of sweet berries.
Melon Slice 1 Snack (0.8s) Vines regrow indefinitely once planted.
Dried Kelp 1 Snack (0.8s) Bulk topper, not a meal.
Cookie 2 Snack (0.8s) Very cheap per hunger point.
Beetroot 1 Snack (1.2s) Its real value is Beetroot Soup below.
Apple 3 Staple (1.6s) Boosted drop rate from oak/dark oak leaves — see Early Game.
Carrot 2 Staple (1.6s) Doubles as animal feed.
Potato (raw) 1 Staple (1.6s) Baked Potato is strictly better for the same crop.
Baked Potato 3 Staple (1.6s) The workhorse of the crop farm.
Bread 3 Staple (1.6s) The default crop-farm output.
Chorus Fruit 2 Staple (1.6s) End-only. Random teleport on eating, unchanged from vanilla.
Poisonous Potato 2 Staple (1.6s) Chance of Poison — a real risk, not a real food source.
Pumpkin Pie 5 Meal (1.6s) Highest single-item Carb value in the game. Doesn't stack.
Honey Bottle 4 Meal (2.0s) Cures Poison on drinking. Can be drunk past a full bar.
Mushroom Stew 4 Meal (1.6s) No crafting table needed. Now stacks to 16.
Beetroot Soup 4 Meal (1.6s) Beetroot's real payoff. Now stacks to 16.
Suspicious Stew 3 Meal (1.6s) Flower-dependent bonus effect, unchanged from vanilla. Now stacks to 16.
Cake (per slice) 2 Instant Must be placed as a block first. 7 slices per cake, unchanged from vanilla.

Mixed — Heals Both, Below the Combined Total

Every Mixed food is deliberately worth less than eating one dedicated Meat item plus one dedicated Carb item. The discount you're paying for is inventory space and prep time, not raw output. None of these are early-game items.

Item Heals Hunger Notes
Meat Stew 2 Hearts 3 Renamed from Rabbit Stew. Five-ingredient recipe. Best hunger-per-slot of the Mixed tier. Now stacks to 16.
Golden Carrot 2 Hearts 2 Reachable once a gold source exists — earned mid-game, not early.
Golden Apple 3 Hearts 3 +Regeneration II (5s). Ingot cost keeps this meaningfully later than Golden Carrot.
Enchanted Golden Apple 4 Hearts (instant) Fills bar Loot-only, unchanged from vanilla. +Regeneration II (20s), Absorption, Fire Resistance, Resistance. Emergency item, not a food source.

What Changes Visually

The Friend recommends using a resourcepack that changes the look of the hotbar to carrots, or apples or anything related to carbs, reinforcing at a glance that it's filled by crops, not meat. While holding any food item in your hotbar, a minimal flashing overlay highlights exactly which hearts and hunger icons it would restore, so you know what you're about to eat before you eat it.

Early Game

Animals are common enough that Health is rarely the early pressure. Hunger on the otherhand, is, as dedicated Carb sources are biome-locked and not always near spawn. Two bridges cover the gap before a real crop farm is running:

  • Apples: drop rate from oak and dark oak leaves is boosted well above vanilla's base 0.5% meaning that players will likely get 1-2 apples from their very first tree chopped. It's a bridge, not a destination.
  • Villages: hay-bales and existing crop fields in villages provide an immediate, no-setup Carb source for any player who finds one early.
