About The Grass Requiem

The Grass Requiem is a mod that overhauls how grass works as well as add a lot of features related to grass and wheat in a way that makes Wheat and Grass more interesting and less static, <s>while also letting you touch grass.</s>

This mod is made as a submission to the MCreative Discord Server's Nature-themed mod jam.

Quick Summary of Features

  • Dirt will turn into Grassy Dirt before turning into Grass Block.
  • Tall Grass grows over time.
  • Scythes (Harvesting tool that can also be used in combat)
  • Wheat Seeds replaced with edible Wheat Grains.
  • Tall Grass is now farmable and can be used as a cheap food source for Animals.
  • Straws, the Byproduct of extracting Wheat Grains can be used as a compact fuel and used to make building blocks.

Grass Growth & Grassy Dirt Block

Dirt blocks adjacent to Grass blocks will first turn into "Grassy Dirt" block. The Grassy Dirt block then would act like a grass block, where it would convert adjacent dirt blocks into Grassy Dirt too. Leave Grassy Dirt for long enough, and it would turn into a full grass block.

The grass foliage you see in the world will now spawn in randomized ages, where some are short and some are half, and some fully grown. Cutting it with your bare hand will not drop anything, but using a Hoe or a Scythe (tool that is going to be explained later) will drop "Cut Grass" and will leave a small grass that will slowly grow back later.

The Cut Grass is an item that can be used as a cheap, low quality drop for breeding animals. Cut Grass does not tempt animals, and the Grass you obtain it from grows twice as slow as normal crops.

Wheat Farming Overhaul

You can no longer get Wheat Seeds from grass. Instead, you will need to find Wild Wheat, which is found in the Plains, Sunflower Plains, Savanna, and Meadow biomes. Harvesting them, will most of the time will give you Plain-old Wheat, but sometimes give you Straw and Wheat Grains.

Wild Wheat

Wheat is no longer used to craft food items, and instead you have to extract the Wheat Grains from it by holding the wheat in your main hand, a hoe or scythe in your off-hand, then right-clicking, which would use up the Wheat and give you Straw and Wheat Grains.

Wheat Grains (Formerly known as Wheat Seeds in Vanilla Minecraft) is a low nutrition food source on their own, but you can craft bread, cake, cookies, as well as Cereal from them (which is a good food source).

Scythes

The Scythe is a Tool set that can be made from ranging between wooden all the way to Netherite, which is a Harvesting Farm tool used to quickly clear out foliage and crops within an area. Grass, Tall Grass, Fern, and Large Fern now take time to remove, having a Hoe and Scythe is important to have in order to clear them out. All Scythes below Diamond tier would clear out 3x3 area of foliage and crops, while diamond tier or above would clear out 5x5 area.

Scythe Tiers

The Scythes can also be used in combat as it gives an extra 1.5 Block and Entity Reach as well as give you an attack speed of 2.6, which would elevate combat by having high-speed attacks. (Using it with Strength II potion will make it incredibly powerful due to high attack speed)

Straw and its uses

Straw is a quite useful byproduct of extracting Wheat Grains from Wheat. First, you could use it to make a Straw Hat you can wear, cus why not? You can also use it as a highly compact furnace fuel source.

On its own, it can only smelt 1.25 items per Straw, which is not that much. But you could convert 9 of them into 1 Straw Bale, in which the Straw Bale would last 9x as long as plain straw so it would smelt 11.25 items per Straw Bale. We are not done compacting the fuel source! You can Compact 4 Straw Bales into 2 Straw Blocks, which would allow you to smelt 22.5 items per Straw Block.

A Straw Block as described earlier is a high density furnace fuel source. That's not its only use though. Straw blocks double as a decorative block in which you can craft them into blocks like slabs and stairs and use them to build whatever you like.

Lastly Packed Mud used to require Wheat, and now would require Straw instead so it makes sense.

Other small Additions and Features

  • Added bunch of villager trades involving all the new added content.
  • JEI compatibility, where you could see information on how to extract Wheat Grains from Wheat.
  • Advancements has been added to help guide the player.
  • Grass Bales exist as a way to store a lot of cut grass.
  • You can use Cut Grass and Grass Bales as a fuel source instead of a cheap breeding food; though they're weaker than straw.
