Description
The Mimic
The Mimic is a psychological horror mod for Minecraft focused on gradual escalation, player imitation, and unpredictable encounters.
The Mimic takes the appearance of the player, including their skin, player model, equipment, and visual layers. At first, it simply observes from a distance. As the Minecraft days progress, its behavior gradually becomes more intrusive and aggressive.
Rather than relying on constant jumpscares, The Mimic is designed around uncertainty and atmosphere. Encounters are rare and unpredictable, allowing the player to notice the entity naturally during normal survival gameplay.
Features
- Exact player appearance using the player's current skin, including Steve/Alex models and skin overlays.
- Player equipment and visual elements are mirrored by the Mimic.
- Six progressive behavior stages based on the number of Minecraft days survived.
- Dynamic encounters that can occur behind the player, in the distance, near buildings, around windows, and near doors.
- The Mimic can observe, follow, imitate movement, disappear, and reappear in different locations.
- Gradual visual distortion, including unnatural head and body movement.
- Environmental interactions such as knocking, opening and breaking doors, and interacting with areas around the player's home.
- Lightweight attacks that focus on psychological effects rather than instantly killing the player.
- Darkness, Blindness, Nausea and other effects can be used during aggressive encounters.
- 30 unique encounters distributed across the six progression stages.
- Server-side AI director responsible for selecting encounter timing and suitable spawn locations.
- Configurable progression, spawn rates, damage, and environmental interactions.
Progression
The Mimic becomes progressively more dangerous as the player survives more Minecraft days.
Stage 1 — Observer
Days 1–2
The Mimic primarily observes the player. It can appear on distant hills, behind trees, near windows, or in other locations where it can be noticed naturally.
It does not attack and may disappear when approached.
Stage 2 — Following
Days 3–5
The Mimic begins following the player from a distance and appears more frequently.
It can mirror basic player movements, appear behind the player, interact with doors, and initiate limited contact.
Stage 3 — Distortion
Days 6–9
The Mimic's behavior and appearance begin to change.
Its movements become unnatural, including sudden head rotations, body distortion, irregular movement, and crawling behavior. Environmental events such as knocking may also become more frequent.
Stage 4 — Aggression
Days 10–14
The Mimic becomes actively hostile.
It can perform ambushes, pursue the player, appear unexpectedly, react to attacks, and use negative status effects before disappearing.
Stage 5 — Intrusion
Days 15–19
The Mimic begins interacting more directly with the player's surroundings.
It can knock on windows and doors, appear around the player's base, break doors, and create encounters inside buildings.
Stage 6 — Nightmare
Day 20+
The Mimic reaches its most advanced behavior.
Encounters become more frequent and unpredictable. The entity can aggressively pursue the player, make sudden movements, teleport short distances, and interact with the environment more extensively.
Events
The mod currently contains 30 unique encounters, with five events assigned to each progression stage.
Events are selected dynamically by the AI director based on the player's location, surroundings, current stage, and encounter cooldowns.
The system is designed to avoid repetitive encounters and prevent The Mimic from behaving like a conventional hostile mob.
Commands
The mod includes commands for testing and development:
/mimic status— Displays the current Minecraft day, active stage, and spawn timer./mimic setday <day>— Changes the current progression day for testing./mimic events [1-6]— Displays the available events for a specific stage./mimic spawn <stage> <event>— Immediately triggers a specific encounter./mimic remove— Removes nearby Mimics./mimic test— Tests Mimic animations and visual distortion.
These commands are intended primarily for development, testing, and content creation.
