Something older than The Nether Fortresses moves under the seas of Magma.

The Nethermaw is a colossal leviathan that drifts through the molten surface of the lava seas throughout the Nether.

Its hide is encased in fused basalt, blackened and warped by ages of unimaginable heat. Great scars split its armor, glowing faintly from within as though something beneath its flesh still burns.

Along its spine run rows of ancient magma vents. They breathe great plumes of smoke into the Nether sky, each exhalation followed by a dull crimson glow beneath its plates. And then there is its maw.

When the creature breaches the surface, its enormous jaw opens vertically, revealing a furnace of molten light within. It is large enough to swallow a horse.

It feeds upon the heat of the Nether itself and the endless furnace buried beneath the world. How long it has lived is unknown. Perhaps it has always been there.

The Nethermaw is no beast to be conquered. It can be neither slain nor tamed

But for those daring enough to brave the depths and bold enough to ride upon this ancient beast, The Nethermaw can serve as a colossal ferryman across the Nether's molten seas. When the leviathan rises from the lava, its enormous back breaks the surface like a black island. Climb aboard. Stand upon its basalt-plated spine and let the creature carry you across the burning ocean, far above the lava that would otherwise consume you.

But keep your eyes sharp adventurer. When smoke begins to billow from The Nethermaw's magma vents, the Nethermaw is preparing to descend. Then the leviathan slips beneath the lava, leaving only a boiling wake behind. An adventurer who fails to dismount in time may find themselves cast into the Nether's burning depths.

🧭 Explore the Nether and one will surface on any large open lava sea nearby, 32 to 96 blocks out

🚫 Never spawns in small pools, cave pockets or fortress lava. You will only ever see one per large body of lava ocean

🥚 A spawn egg sits in the creative Spawn Eggs tab and works when clicked on lava

Nethermaw is currently a Fabric 1.21.1 mod. Cross-platform and cross-version support is planned, in this order:

FAQ

Does it attack me? No. It is completely passive.

Can I kill it? No. It is invulnerable to normal damage. /kill still works if you really need it gone.

Does it drop anything? No. The reward is the ride and the view.

How do I find one? Explore the Nether. They surface on their own near large lava oceans. There is also a creative spawn egg.

Will it break my world or my other mods? It adds one mob and a spawn egg. No terrain generation changes, no block changes and no recipe changes.

Can I add to an already existing Minecraft world? Yes.

Does it work on servers? Yes. Install it on both the server and the client.
