Description

The Rake: After Dark

The forest isn’t empty. Something is watching.

A pale figure stands between the trees.

For a moment, it does nothing.

Then it starts running.

The Rake: After Dark is a survival-horror mod for Minecraft Java 1.20.1 on Forge, featuring an animated stalker, a directional flashlight, abandoned observation structures, and a darker nighttime atmosphere.

The Rake

The Rake approaches quietly and watches before beginning its pursuit. Getting too close—or pointing your flashlight at it—can turn a distant sighting into a chase.

  • Custom pale, long-armed creature model.
  • Glowing eyes.
  • Procedural idle, walking, running, and claw-attack animations.
  • Stalking and chasing behavior.
  • Creature sounds and proximity heartbeat.
  • Ordinary Rakes disappear after five seconds of exposure to open daylight.

The Rake can fight, but it cannot break blocks or open doors.

It ignores Creative and Spectator players. Switch to Survival to test its pursuit and attacks.

A flashlight—not fullbright

Your flashlight lights a limited area where you look, rather than brightening the entire world.

  • 12-block directional beam.
  • Soft beam edges and distance falloff.
  • Wall-occlusion checks.
  • Main-hand and offhand support.
  • Battery indicator.
  • Redstone recharging.
  • No Night Vision or global brightness boost.

Controls

  • Right-click: toggle the flashlight.
  • Sneak + right-click: recharge using one redstone dust from your inventory.

A full battery lasts approximately six minutes of active use by default. Creative players do not consume battery charge.

Be careful: pointing the beam at the Rake can provoke it.

Abandoned watchposts

Search forests, dark forests, taigas, and swamps for:

  • Wooden lookout towers.
  • Small abandoned shelters.
  • Supply chests containing useful survival items.

Climb above the tree line and search for movement—but remember that a better view does not guarantee safety.

Structures generate in newly generated chunks. If you add the mod to an existing world, explore new terrain to find them.

Horror atmosphere

The atmosphere begins before you enter your world:

  • Custom dark-forest main menu.
  • Original synthesized ambience and creature sounds.
  • Nighttime Overworld fog.
  • Proximity heartbeat and subtle screen-edge effects.
  • An in-game survival field guide.

First-time players receive a flashlight and field guide by default. This can be disabled in the configuration.

Immediate testing commands

You do not need to wait for a natural encounter.

With cheats enabled or operator permission level 2:

Command Action
/rake Spawn a test Rake on nearby safe ground.
/rake spawn Alternative version of the spawn command.
/rake clear Remove test-command Rakes within 64 blocks in your current dimension.

Test-command Rakes ignore daylight and persist until killed, cleared, or removed by Peaceful difficulty.

/rake clear leaves ordinary natural, spawn-egg, and /summon Rakes alone.

The spawn command refuses to work on Peaceful. Use Survival to test attacks.

Installation

  1. Install Minecraft Java 1.20.1.
  2. Install Forge 47.3.12.
  3. Use Java 17.
  4. Place the mod’s .jar file in your Minecraft mods folder.
  5. Launch the Forge profile.

No additional library mods are required.

For multiplayer, install the same mod version on both the server and every client.

This mod is not for Fabric, NeoForge, Bedrock Edition, or Minecraft 1.21.

Configuration

Settings are available in:

config/rake-common.toml

Options include:

  • Starter flashlight and guide.
  • Natural Rake spawning.
  • Horror main menu.
  • Nighttime fog.
  • Additional horror ambience.
  • Flashlight battery duration.

Compatibility and development status

This is an early version, with further testing and improvements still needed.

The flashlight uses Minecraft’s block-resolution lighting, not a high-resolution shader spotlight. Its edges can appear blocky, and lighting updates may affect performance on slower computers.

Each client currently renders its own flashlight beam. Other players’ flashlight cones are not replicated as additional dynamic lights.

Shader packs, replacement rendering engines, and large modpacks have not been broadly tested.

Back up important worlds before installing or updating. Remove the old mod JAR when updating—do not keep multiple versions installed.

Content warning

Contains stalking, creature shrieks, dark environments, and subtle red screen-edge pulses.
