Description

Wayfinder: Trailbound

Remember the destination. Retrace the journey. Find your wayโ€”without teleporting.

Wayfinder: Trailbound is a navigation-focused Fabric mod for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.11. It helps you remember meaningful locations and return from long expeditions while preserving the adventure of travelling there yourself.

Craft a Wayfinder and build a personal Trailbook containing up to eight destinations. Each marker can be named, colored, assigned an icon, and selected for guidance through the Wayfinderโ€™s animated compass needle, distance readings, world markers, and particles.

Wayfinder is designed for players who want help exploring caves, crossing dimensions, recovering lost locations, and finding homeโ€”without replacing survival travel with instant teleportation.

The Expedition Update โ€” Version 1.2

Wayfinder 1.2 expands the mod from a destination compass into a complete exploration companion.

Retrace your journey with Trail Mode

Press G while holding a Wayfinder to begin recording your route. Explore normally while the Wayfinder remembers the path behind you.

Press G again when you are ready to return. The Wayfinder will guide you backward through the recorded breadcrumbsโ€”including turns, jumps, tunnels, and elevation changesโ€”until you arrive at the original starting point.

During the return journey, press G to pause or resume guidance without losing your progress.

A living compass

The Wayfinder now behaves more like a physical Minecraft compass:

  • Its needle animates directly on the held item.
  • The needle points toward the active marker or next Trail Mode breadcrumb.
  • Optional colored world markers show saved destinations in the environment.
  • Guidance reports distance, direction, and whether the destination is above, below, or level with you.
  • Proximity particles, sounds, and compass behavior become more noticeable as you approach your destination.

The larger center-screen compass display remains available as an optional accessibility setting but is disabled by default.

Expanded marker customization

Trailbook markers can now use recognizable icons such as:

  • Home
  • Mine
  • Village
  • Portal
  • Treasure
  • Danger
  • Farm
  • Death
  • Waystone
  • Lodestone

These icons appear alongside optional letter symbols to make markers easier to distinguish.

Improved Waystones and recovery

  • Name placed Waystones using Name Tags.
  • Recolor Waystones with dyes.
  • Let every player save the same shared landmark in their own Wayfinder.
  • Save ordinary Minecraft Lodestones as named destinations.
  • Preserve Last Death markers across world or server restarts.
  • Receive death markers in available Wayfinders, including those stored in an Ender Chest.
  • Protect existing personal markers if a Trailbook is already full.

Accessibility and presentation

Version 1.2 also introduces:

  • A redesigned parchment-style Trailbook.
  • Adjustable compass HUD size.
  • Full, compass-only, and disabled HUD modes.
  • Independent world-marker controls.
  • Optional marker letters.
  • Full, reduced, or disabled particles.
  • Toggleable guidance sounds.
  • A redesigned, rounder Wayfinder texture with animated needle states.
  • An expanded advancement journey with a proper Minecraft Adventure background.

Trailbook navigation

Every Wayfinder stores its own collection of up to eight markers.

  • Open the Trailbook with sneak-use or the rebindable M key.
  • Select, rename, recolor, re-icon, or delete individual markers.
  • Sneak-scroll while holding a Wayfinder to cycle through markers quickly.
  • Receive Overworld and Nether portal-coordinate estimates when appropriate.
  • Preserve markers and active selections created in Wayfinder 1.1.1.

Controls

  • Use on a block: Save and activate a marker.
  • Use in the air: Request guidance toward the active destination.
  • Sneak + mouse wheel: Cycle through saved markers.
  • Sneak + use: Open the Trailbook.
  • M: Open the Trailbook.
  • G: Start Trail Mode, begin the return journey, or pause and resume the return.
  • Empty hand on a Waystone: Read its name and location.
  • Name Tag on a Waystone: Give the Waystone a shared name.
  • Dye on a Waystone: Change its marker and particle color.

All controls using keyboard keys can be changed through Minecraftโ€™s Controls menu.
