Description
What Followed You
It remembers the way home.
Something that looks like Steve is watching from the darkness. Tonight, it may come closer.
What Followed You brings a persistent stalker into your Minecraft survival world. The Being follows your movements and turns familiar places into uncomfortable territory. Its behavior develops through observations and completed encounters, while the threat escalates across nights.
You might hear breathing before you see it. A shape may appear at the edge of your vision. Or you may return home to find a gift you never asked for.
A familiar face, made unsettling
The Being resembles a corrupted Steve: ash-colored skin, hollow eyes, faded turquoise clothing, and an unnatural posture. Articulated limbs and animations carry it through stalking, hiding, revealing itself, and leaving gifts. Its body follows the world's lighting, with small emissive eye marks visible in the dark.
The longer it watches, the more it can do
The mod has 19 progressively unlocked abilities, with encounters controlled by cooldowns, conditions, and night escalation. Its repertoire includes:
- Stalking and pursuit: shadowing, corner watching, flanking, and returning to a player's last observed location.
- Atmospheric pressure: whispers, nearby breathing, fog, vanishing, and sleep interruption.
- Unwanted gifts: dropped items or presents placed in empty item frames, progressing from poppies and red wool to bones and stranger materials.
- A changing neighborhood: torch and light manipulation, small structures, base infiltration, and animal possession.
- Mimicry: encounters that draw on observed player behavior and nearby text chat.
The Being keeps learned state through normal world saving. Natural spawning allows one persistent creature per dimension, including while its chunk is unloaded. Encounters retain a specific player target, and learned player profiles are stored separately.
AI that runs inside Minecraft
What Followed You includes a custom embedded language model and seven adaptive neural networks, written in Java and running inside the mod. A trained baseline ships in the jar; the creature adapts using feedback from encounters that actually execute.
The language model is a compact causal transformer specialized in choosing horror actions from game context. It is not a general-purpose conversational assistant. Whispers use authored dialogue, and chat mimicry uses observed text messages rather than microphone input.
Gameplay requires no API key, external AI server, separately downloaded model, native inference installation, or Python runtime.
Installation and configuration
- Minecraft: 1.21.1
- Loader: NeoForge 21.1.176 or a compatible newer 21.1.x release
- Java: 21
- Install on: both the client and the server
Place the mod jar in your instance's mods folder and remove older copies of this mod. Fabric, classic Forge, and other Minecraft versions are not supported by this release.
Settings are generated in config/horrorbeingai-common.toml. Adjust spawning distance, escalation, fog, gifts, vanishing, sleep interruption, perception, memory limits, and decision frequency.
Creature-driven block edits respect mobGriefing and NeoForge edit-protection events. Containers and unbreakable blocks are excluded. With mobGriefing disabled, block changes stop; atmospheric encounters and dropped gifts can still occur.
Frequently asked questions
Why hasn't the Being spawned?
Automatic spawning requires nighttime and a living Survival or Adventure player. Creative and Spectator players do not trigger spawning or become stalking targets. Spawn locations must be safe and inside active chunks. An existing creature, even in an unloaded chunk, occupies the dimension's natural population slot. Operators can run /horror spawning to inspect the current blockers.
Can I inspect it in Creative?
Use its spawn egg or /summon horrorbeingai:horror_being. Switch to Survival or Adventure to experience stalking.
Can I talk to its language model?
No. The model selects encounter actions; it does not provide unrestricted player conversations. Operator diagnostics, including /horror status and /horror llm, require permission level 2.
Build your shelter. Keep your lights on. Pay attention to what was not there yesterday.
