Fern & Fable - Currently in beta
A little farm life, a little adventure, and plenty of reasons to stay awhile.
Welcome to Fern & Fable, a cozy, countryside-inspired Minecraft modpack about making a home and enjoying everything that comes with it.
Find a quiet spot to settle down, build yourself a cottage, start a garden, and fill your days with whatever takes your fancy. Maybe you'll spend the morning looking after your animals, try out a new recipe in the afternoon, or head into the woods and end up somewhere completely unexpected.
Inspired by modpacks like Homestead and BigChadGuysPlus, Fern & Fable brings together farming, cooking, animal care, collecting, and exploration, with a focus on making the everyday parts of Minecraft a little more interesting.
There's no particular way you're meant to play. Settle down, get comfortable, and see where things take you.

A Farmer's Life
There's something satisfying about watching a small patch of farmland turn into a proper little farm.
With Farm & Charm, Bountiful Fares, and other farming additions, there's much more to grow than the usual wheat and potatoes. Plant an orchard, tend to your vegetable garden, or grow enough crops to keep a whole village fed.
Serene Seasons brings the changing seasons into the mix, so the countryside won't look quite the same all year round. You'll have to think a little more about what you're growing and when, while enjoying the changes each season brings.
And when you're done harvesting, there's always something to make with everything you've grown.
From the Garden to the Table
I've always liked the idea of having a proper kitchen in Minecraft, one that actually gets used rather than just being there for decoration.
Kaleidoscope Cookery and its add-ons make preparing meals a more involved activity, with different ingredients, kitchen tools, and recipes to experiment with.
Alongside cooking, there are plenty of other things to try, from baking and brewing to making tea and other drinks.
You could grow all your own ingredients, open a small bakery, or spend an afternoon trying to make something new. It's a nice excuse to give your kitchen a little more attention.
Life Around the Barn
Of course, it wouldn't feel much like the countryside without a few animals wandering around.
Animal Husbandry adds more depth to keeping livestock, with additional care and breeding mechanics, while Barnyard Buddies introduces more animals to bring home.
For anyone who enjoys horses, Star Worm Equestrian Mod (SWEM) offers a more detailed equestrian experience. Build your own stables, care for your horses, and take them out exploring whenever you feel like it.
Whether you prefer keeping a handful of animals behind your cottage or running a much larger farm, there's plenty to keep you occupied.
A Garden in Bloom
Not everything in your garden needs to be edible.
Fern & Fable includes a variety of flowers, plants, and greenery to make the world feel more colorful. With Flower Breeding: Replanted, you can experiment with growing different flower varieties and gradually build up your own collection.
Buzzier Bees also adds to Minecraft's beekeeping, giving you another reason to keep a few hives tucked away among the flowers.
Make a little greenhouse, plant a wildflower meadow, or simply spend some time making the space around your home look nice.
A Place to Call Home
Building and decorating have always been some of my favorite parts of Minecraft, so naturally, there's quite a lot of it here.
Between Handcrafted, Cozy Home, Supplementaries, the Macaw's collection, and other decorative additions, there are all sorts of ways to make your builds feel more lived in.
Furnish your cottage, put together a cozy kitchen, build a greenhouse, or decorate an entire village. You can also get into smaller creative hobbies like painting and pottery.
I wanted there to be enough variety that you could spend hours working on your home without running out of ideas.
The Little Things
Sometimes it's nice to have something to do that doesn't involve gathering resources or working on your next big project.
Fern & Fable has quite a few activities for those quieter days. Collect Buddycards, discover dolls and other trinkets, or put together a room to display everything you've found.
You can play board and card games with friends through Block & Board, take photographs with Exposure, or try your hand at running a café with Cozy Cafe.
Fishing has also been expanded with Tide 2, bringing new fish, equipment, and a fishing journal to fill out.
There are lots of small things to get distracted by, and that's rather the point.
Beyond the Garden Gate
As nice as it is to stay home, there's still a whole world out there.
Biomes O' Plenty, Nature's Spirit, BloomingNature, and Tectonic bring more variety to the landscape, with forests, mountains, and other places worth exploring.
Pack some supplies and go camping, take your horse out for a long ride, or travel a little further with Immersive Vehicles. You might be looking for resources, searching for somewhere new to build, or just enjoying the scenery.
There's no shortage of places to wander, and you never know what you might find along the way.
A Quieter Kind of Survival
One of the things I'm working on for Fern & Fable is giving players a choice in how they experience survival.
Cozy Mode is intended for those who would rather enjoy the Overworld without hostile mobs interrupting their day. Unlike Peaceful difficulty, hunger and other survival mechanics still apply.
And if you do feel like taking on a few monsters, the Overworld Mirror provides a separate dimension where you can venture out for a more traditional survival experience.
Classic Mode keeps the usual hostile mob spawning in the Overworld for players who prefer Minecraft's familiar challenges.
The idea is to make room for both playstyles without having to give up the parts of survival you enjoy.
This system is still being developed and tested during beta.
A Little Note From Me
Fern & Fable started as a personal project because I wanted a modpack that brought together all the things I enjoy most about Minecraft.
I've always loved building little homes, looking after animals, decorating, and finding things to collect. I wanted those activities to feel like a bigger part of the game, rather than something to do between adventures.
The pack is still a work in progress, and I'm continuing to test different mods, adjust configurations, and figure out what fits together. Things may change along the way.
More than anything, I want Fern & Fable to be somewhere you can spend an evening doing whatever you feel like, without needing a checklist of things to accomplish.
I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I've enjoyed putting it together.
Make yourself at home.
