Let's apply what Minecraft has best to offer to what a geologist would do in real life.  I want you to learn as you play.  I have included mods for you to find exciting ores, metals, gems, goodies to help you stay excited in playing minecraft.  

You survive the first day with a simple camp fire and a wooden shear

You explore the overworld, caves, biomes with multiple plants

You map your minecraft world

You collect rocks from geosys, ores from multiple mods, minerals, metals, crystals and organize them

You mine resources the Vanilla Minecraft way.

P.S. Ore generation is off the chart due to multiple mods creating similar and different ores (More fun)
