GRIMM: Gears of the Frontier

Build a colony. Power its industry. Explore the frontier together.

GRIMM: Gears of the Frontier brings together the settlement building of MineColonies, the mechanical engineering of Create, and custom quests focused on making them work together.

Start with a place to call home, establish your first workshops, and develop the supplies your growing settlement needs. Turn timber into building materials, harvest crops for your workers, organize deliveries, and expand from a small outpost into a colony supported by your own industry.

Whether you enjoy designing factories, managing a town, constructing detailed buildings, or exploring with friends, GRIMM gives your projects a shared purpose: helping the settlement grow.

Build a living colony with MineColonies. Plan your settlement, establish housing, assign workers, and supply construction projects. As your colony develops, expand its workforce, improve its buildings, and pursue research that supports more advanced work.

Your colony creates practical goals for your engineering. A construction project needs materials. Workers need food and tools. A growing population needs housing and dependable services. Those needs help you decide what to build next.

Put Create to work. Begin with rotational power and a few useful machines, then develop processing lines that serve your settlement. Learn to press, mix, mill, process, and move materials. Build farms and workshops that produce useful supplies, then organize storage and delivery so those supplies reach the people who need them.

Later projects can involve brass machinery, precision assembly, mechanical crafting, larger power systems, and freight transport. Create addons—including Steam ’n’ Rails, Create: The Factory Must Grow, and Create Aeronautics—expand the possibilities for railways, industrial production, and flight.

Follow a practical quest journey. GRIMM includes 179 custom quests in FTB Quests, organized into eight chapters. The progression connects colony management with engineering through specific, useful projects.

Chapter What you will work toward
Colony foundations Establish or join a settlement, prepare its supplies, and get its first buildings and workers operating.
A working Create workshop Learn mechanical power, basic processing, and moving items between machines and containers.
Dependable supplies Produce food, timber, stone, and other building materials in useful quantities.
Factory to colony logistics Connect workshop output with warehouses, couriers, worker requests, and completed construction.
Brass and precision Develop heated processing, brass production, deployers, and more advanced assembly.
Research and skilled workers Use the University, improve services, and give your colony more responsibility for production.
Shared delivery and capstone Demonstrate reliable deliveries, recover from interruptions, and complete a working colony workshop.
Optional projects Explore additional goals such as freight trains, steam power, aircraft deliveries, education, and specialized industry.

The quests combine automatic objectives and manual project confirmations. Colony foundations uses inventory checks and native MineColonies advancements. Later chapters combine equipment checks with practical demonstrations: follow the instructions, inspect your result, and confirm the project when it works. Read each objective for its completion method; the quest book does not automatically evaluate every building or factory.

For advancement objectives, use Survival mode and the normal placement and construction process. An existing building or a block placed in Creative mode may not trigger the advancement that an objective expects.

Existing progress counts where an objective explicitly allows a demonstration. If your group already has a working workshop or an established colony, follow that quest’s instructions to show what it does. Automatic objectives still depend on their inventory or advancement conditions.

Quest progress is shared within an FTB team, with small personal experience rewards. Follow the installed recipe browser, colony interfaces, and research requirements for the actual conditions needed to craft or unlock something.

Give the frontier its own character. Building and decoration mods—including Chipped, Rechiseled, FramedBlocks, Domum Ornamentum, and Create: Copycats+—provide options for shaping your settlement around a consistent style.

Build a timber outpost, a busy industrial district, a farming village, or a railway town. Add workshops, roads, warehouses, public spaces, and the details that make a settlement feel lived in.

Farmer’s Delight and its addons support farming and cooking, while Sea Life adds aquatic content. These systems give you more ways to develop the quieter parts of colony life alongside your machinery and construction projects.

Explore beyond your settlement. World generation mods such as Tectonic and Midgardd give you varied landscapes to scout, settle, and connect. Look for resources, choose locations for outposts, and plan routes between the places your group uses.

The frontier also brings danger. Born in Chaos adds hostile encounters, while the included TaCZ port and Create Big Cannons expand the equipment and engineering projects available for combat and defense.

Work together with clear responsibilities. GRIMM’s cooperative setup lets friends contribute in different ways. One player can manage construction while another develops food production, builds machinery, or scouts a transport route.

Open Parties and Claims provides party and land-claim tools. Lootr gives players individual loot in supported containers. Colony access remains controlled through MineColonies, so players can receive the permissions needed for their responsibilities.

Quest teams, land claims, colony permissions, and server ranks are separate systems. Completing a quest does not automatically grant building access or promote a player.

The GRIMM dedicated-server configuration uses disabled PvP and a 25% sleeping requirement. Server roles, starter kits, and the field menu depend on that server setup and are not automatically installed in a new singleplayer world.

Keep everyday tasks manageable. JEI helps you find recipes, Jade provides information about what you are looking at, and storage options such as Sophisticated Backpacks and Storage Drawers help organize your materials. Waystones and Nature’s Compass support travel and exploration, while FallingTree makes gathering timber more convenient.

First public beta. GRIMM Handbook is not included in this release, so no Handbook chat button is installed. The client pack includes starter notes and the FTB Quests progression. Server roles, kits and field-menu pages require a separately configured GRIMM server; this download is a client modpack, not a complete server pack.

Start with one useful project. Establish your first shelter and supplies, choose a colony site or join an existing settlement, and open the quest book. Get a Builder working, secure food and materials, and assemble a small Create workshop. From there, improve whichever part of the settlement needs your attention. Enable the included GRIMM Quest Capstone resource pack to display the custom finale artwork.

GRIMM is built for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 using NeoForge. For multiplayer, use the same modpack release as the server you are joining.
