You DO NOT have to purchase a server, it is just recommended to ensure good server performance since essential mod has bugs and can be very laggy.
In order to get to the backrooms, suffocate yourself with sand or gravel.
Explore endless liminal hallways, encounter strange and horrifying entities, and experience the classic VHS backrooms found footage vibe, in Minecraft! There are 5 levels, 2 entities, and many horror events in this modpack (see spoiler below for details).
Levels, entities, and events (SPOILER):
LEVELS (SPOILER)
Level 0: The Lobby. The classic backrooms level. Find a room lit up with white lights, a chained fence, and a downwards staircase to get to the next level.
Level 1: The Habitable Zone. A parking garage-looking level. This level has 2 exits. One is a downwards staircase, bringing you to level 2, and another with an upwards staircase, bringing you to level 324.
Level 2: Pipe Dreams. A long piped hallway that seems endless. Run down either side until your screen starts to glitch to get to the next level.
Level 324: Forgotten Station. A gas station with a long 2-lane road and a secret door in the gas station. If you go through the door in the gas station and you end up in a dark area with large pillars, hanging lights, and dripping liquid, you went the wrong way. Go back or type /level level324 to return to the gas station. Run down either side of the road along the grass, and you'll eventually fall into the next level.
Level 37: The Poolrooms. Every room has white tile flooring, walls, and ceiling, and shallow pools. You need to find a very large room with a staircase going upward along the wall and go through the hole in the wall to get to the next level.
Level 10: Infinite Grass Field. A flat field with tall grass waving in the wind. Find a very large structure with a fence and staircase leading upward to escape the backrooms.
Entities (SPOILER):
Level 0: The Lobby. This level has a skinwalker, which is only enabled in multiplayer. This entity will take over someone's body and use their microphone to trick others into thinking they are real. After some time or after being attacked, the entity will come out and start to attack the others. After some time, they will return to their normal self. If there are any issues with this entity, type /release (username) to release the player from the skinwalker.
Level 1: The Habitable Zone. This level has smilers. These entities will only come out every few minutes when the lights shut off. They will deal damage as long as they are able to see you. To eliminate them, shine your flashlight at them and make sure you're close enough, and they'll disappear.
Events (SPOILER):
UNIVERSAL: Every few minutes, you will get any of these: A horror achievement, a horror message sent in chat, a fake join/leave message sent in chat, or a fake death message. If you type a message in chat, an entity named OBFUSCATED may respond to you (JOIN DISCORD SERVER FOR FULL TRIGGER LIST). There are also a lot of sounds that will be heard throughout all the levels.
Level 0: The Lobby. This level has many audio tracks (songs, crowd chattering, intercom, etc.), the lights will flicker or shut off completely, and a skinwalker may possess a friend.
Level 1: The Habitable Zone. This level has ambient audio tracks (distant crashes and construction-type sounds), and the lights will shut off every few minutes for about 30 seconds, where smilers will appear and attack you.
Level 2: Pipe Dreams. The hallway may begin to twist and wind, making a bending noise. There are also audio tracks that are played in the distance every few minutes.
Level 324: The Forgotten Station. There is a door in the station which brings you to a dark and wide area. There is nothing to find here except the loud howl of an unknown creature. Do not take this route, as there is no exit to the next level.
Level 37: The Poolrooms. This level has a day and night cycle. After a few minutes, it will become sunset. During this time, the water is toxic and will deal damage if you enter it. After another few minutes, it will become nighttime. The water will still be toxic at this time. Once morning comes, the water becomes safe to enter again.
Level 10: The Infinite Grass field. This level has many audio tracks (bells, alarms, whistles, etc.)
Commands:
/skinwalker (username) : turn one of your friends into a skinwalker
/release (username) : releases a player from skinwalker
/backroomsevent (event) : forces backrooms event
/gimmemyinventoryback (username) : allows players to bring their inventory they had in the overworld into the backrooms, since entering the backrooms clears your inventory
