Description
Oh ye of faint heart, turn back now. This is a pack designed and curated with one goal in mind, and several design philosophies to support it.
The goal? Create a minecraft experience intended to last for a long, long time -- a deep world that will challenge you months down the road, instead of being outgrown in weeks, allowing boredom to take in and encourage server resets. To do this, several key philosophies are in place:
1. Death and durability matters. Or at least I've tried to make it so. No indestructible enchantments, and the balance is based around vanilla+. Corpse Complex ensures a couple corpse runs will be lethal to your gear.
2. Insane amount of adventuring content. Several dimensions, packed full of content, with limits to the power of gear (no Tinker's Construct here.) Remember when bosses were challenging?
3. Spawners break after a handful of mobs pop out. I highly encourage a server or self-enforced ruleset that prohibits creating other basic forms of spawners to camp for free exp. AFK farming like that, in safety, will always ruin the game's progression, and I unfortunately was not able to find a mechanical way to stop it (but it's much easier to enforce when people can't just hide a spawner somewhere.
4. Greatly enhanced and more dangerous AI, paired with a large selection of minecraft-flavored monsters. Make sure you have some walls up early and that nothing can spawn inside them.
I'll keep refining and improving on this pack as I see things that need adjustment. I'm sure I missed things that need tuning.
Good luck, have fun, don't die!
Additional thanks to JordanGreywolf for his Ruins structures template, which are present in this pack!
Things to know when playing:
1. Thirst and Temperature are both present as Needs in this pack, per the Simple Difficulty mod. Thirst is represented by the blue bubbles above your food, and can be satiated by crouch + right-clicking a water source block. You can purify water to avoid the tainted water debuff, but I haven't found it necessary. Perhaps as a luxury later on when you're more set up. Temperature is represented by the icon to the left of your food/water. There's an inner circle and an outer ring. The outer ring represents what temperature you're trending toward, and the inner is your body temperature. It can take time for these to adjust. Use common sense when determining what increases or decreases your body temp. Standing next to lava, or in the rain will adjust it accordingly, as will altitude and the biome you're in. If you intend to stay in a very cold region, or a very hot region, I suggest wool armor or ice armor. If you don't like these additional Needs, just disable the Simple Difficulty mod (assuming you're not playing on a server with it enabled) in order to not deal with them.
2. Realistic Torches means your basic torches have to be lit by a matchbox (or some other method.) They expire after a certain amount of time. This prevents the torch spam you get from new players trying to light up everything and stop monster spawning, which can cause issues later on or tediousness of cleaning them up later. For continuous early light, I suggest stealing torches from villages that have the vanilla torches, or Jack o'Lanterns / Lanters / Glowstone dust. There are others, but those are off the top of my head.
3. I've set up the death system so you lose 30% durability on all items in your inventory and equipped when you die. Get yourself into too tough a situation, and losing your gear entirely is a very real possibility from a string of multiple deaths. Also, to prevent cheesing this system, any Shulker Boxes or similar containers that you can carry (that hold stuff inside even while in your inventory) will be destroyed on your death, assuming you are carrying them. The same goes for the Traveler's Backpack. So you really don't want to be carrying these things, filled with items, into dangerous situations.
4. This pack uses the mod AI Awareness to enhance the lethality of its low-tier monsters. Zombies are a real threat if you're by a light source, or make a loud noise, or if they call to their friends. It doesn't just affect zombies, either (although they are most predominately affected)! Get a blood splatter in the middle of the night and there's a good chance a whole horde will converge upon you. See that mod's page for more info about the specifics. It is a fantastic one!
5. Don't forget to customize the mini-map to your liking using the mod options (it will be under Xaero's Minimap.) Also, The One Probe options will allow you to make the tooltip that appears in the top left when hovering over an item/block bigger or appear in a different position if you so choose (the default is pretty awkward imo, but everyone has different setups so I didn't want to mess with it at all.)
6. I didn't get around to unbinding all the non-default keys so people could mess with it on their own. If you aren't using one though, just click it in the controls options and press ESC to unbind. Most of them are associated with mods and are unnecessary unless you are wielding a certain item or using a certain block from those mods.
7. Millenaire greatly expands on the village system an implements a reputation with each culture, among many other things. Take a look at their site for details if you're interested.
8. I have set the maximum number of squid, via inControl, to be 10 at any time. This is because they are the only creature that can spawn in rivers/lakes prior to the underwater update (that comes after 1.12.) This helps reduce the unnecessary resources they require from the server, as it takes up other mob spawning slots and increases processing requirements... I have also made it so the Wither cannot be spawned below 30 Y, and in any dimension except the Overworld. This prevents locking it into Bedrock for cheasy kills. You can also tweak this by removing or changing the 'spawn' file in the config/inControl folder.
9. ...Will add more as I think of important points.
