About

Description

Minecraft: Legacy Console Edition was the most populous of versions of Minecraft, being released on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. But only 12 people were able to download Minecraft: PlayStation 5 Edition.

Discovery

On November 25th, 2020, shortly after the PlayStation 5's release, a group of hackers leaked of multiple unreleased games that made its way into the PlayStation Store, including a beta of Minecraft: PlayStation 5 Edition.

It was a more optimized version of Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition that included tons of additional features from the Nether Update on Java a few months prior. This was also the only version capable of near-infinite world generation and farther render distance up to 22 chunks, thanks to the upgraded graphics unit in the PlayStation 5.

Other noticeable changes included new button icons, hardcore mode, a new logo, and support for 120 FPS TVs and Monitors.

This, at least, is all according to "BensonReborn96", the only person who was able to archive the lost version on Thanksgiving Day, 2020.

The game was up for just under 2 minutes, as Sony swiftly took action against the leaked games. The lost Minecraft version is still archived and hosted.

The Leak

Dubbed the "2020 PlayStation Store Leak", it costed Sony a frightening $16 million to remove the games from libraries and from the PlayStation Store. The leak took nearly two days to resolve.

On November 27th, 2020, Sony addressed the leaks and stated that...

The games that were listed on November 25th had no means of reaching the PlayStation Store.

Horror

BensonReborn96 and 11 other people were able to play the lost beta of the game for about 55-65 minutes before being booted by Sony and having the game removed from the library. Benson was the only person who archived Minecraft: PlayStation 5 Edition. The 12 people, including Benson, noticed some strange and disturbing things from within it.

Notable Minecraft mythologies kept terrorizing their worlds, and random blocks of bedrock kept spawning in addition. This made the game extremely disturbing, despite that Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition, the version this is based on, did not have these events anywhere in the code.

Benson reached out to 4J Studios if they ever planned on making this beta as haunting as it was, and they reached back saying...

We were, in fact, hard at work making a PlayStation 5 port of Minecraft. We had tons of features of the Nether Update in it, but we did not implant any of the 'anomolies' you encountered.

If you're wondering where it is now, this is that version.

Recommended Setup

  • 60 fps monitor, preferrably 1920x1080
  • DualSense Wireless Controller (any other controller is fine)
