Description

Tenebrous II is a survival horror sequel modpack designed to scare, or at least spook. The world is a harsh one, threats around every corner. Can you survive in this immersive, difficult, and uncaring world?

Please make sure to check the installation instructions

  • Obviously, the tone is meant to be scary, or at least spooky. This is less of a cave dweller jmpscare modpack, more of a creeping and slow-paced horror experience. Most of the fear comes from dread
  • a new beginner's guide to survival book craftable at any time with just a block of dirt. please check it out if you're a little lost. It also contains credits to the music I used
  • Intense survival features, crafting a rather difficult experience in relatively unorthodox ways
  • very rich and immersive ambience aimed to truly bring you into the world
  • many new enemies, weapons, blocks, and even bosses to hone in on the dark fantasy/gothic aesthetic
  • Blood Magic to provide a more magical method of dealing with reality. find out how to use it here
  • quality of life improvements to enhance the gaming experience
  • a whole slew of resource packs to drastically improve the game's visuals
  • completely custom-made title screen, hud, and gui provided by vanillatweaks to give it identity
  • heavily optimized gameplay to function on (hopefully) lower-end systems
  • built-in shader support
  • complete compatibility and config tweaks to most mods that required it

Tenebrous II is a sequel to the original Tenebrous (link here), which was created for halloween to provide a much more ambient, much quieter form of terror that minecraft doesn't often see. It aims to create an immensly immersive, rich, and dynamic world that responds to the player, whilst still remaining desolate and unkind. I really tried to tap into the dread that comes from loneliness in minecraft, and I believe it succeeds at least a little bit. Even if you are not afraid, it certainly makes for a very different aesthetic that is not often seen in other modpacks, as this is much more of a gothic horror.

Tenebrous II can be installed just like any other modpack, however a few things should be mentioned first.

After you've installed the modpack, please check the following:

  • As a general rule of thumb, manually allocate additional memory to the profile if possible
  • Make sure that the resource pack called "GUI Fixes" is ABOVE VanillaTweaks. Both are required packs as they provide a majority of the custom ui, but vanilla tweaks can override my custom sprite art, and make it not appear
  • Check the added resource packs, and enabled which ones you might want to use. The resource pack count is very large, so please take your time and consider which ones you'd like to use
  • do know that Tenebrous II comes pre-installed with a shader, and in fact you should check out the entire graphical options to make sure they fit best for you. don't forget to make the environments as dark as possible!
  • please ensure that you read the logbook upon joining the world, at least the entry on how to make beginning tools. It will become apparent why

Additional note: This modpack is incompatible with optifine. However, shaders are natively supported due to Oculus, so do not fear!

If you, as a player, have any suggestions on what could be changed, added, or removed, please feel free to let me know in the comments! I want to continually improve this modpack for as long as I'm able, and I am not afraid of constructive criticism! It helps me make the modpack better, which is something I'm sure everyone wants.

1.12 - Mod Mixup

  • Replaced Spoiled with Food Spoilage, Butcher's Delight with Butchery, Liko's Tarantulas with ArPhEx, and Sound Physics Remastered with Sound Physics Perfected
  • Added First Person Model, Female Gender, and Overgeared
  • Added Fresh Animations packs in resource packs
  • removed no_moon.jar and rose gold, among other useless mods
  • All stone and deepslate have a chance of dropping ore chunks
  • removed herobrine

1.11 - New Horrors

  • Changed starting items
  • Added lore entry to starting book
  • Some mobs spawn post-nether
  • Added no_moon.jar
  • Switched to Backpacked
  • removed herobrine

1.10 - New Equipment

  • Added Rose Gold equipment
  • Added new mobs
  • Tweaked audio of existing creatures
  • Added Curios
  • Made day speed 50% slower
  • removed herobrine

1.9 - Content, changes, and much more

  • removed amplified nether, whispering spirits, and some resource packs out of redundancy
  • removed cherry groves, lush caves, flower forests, meadows, and more abandoned villages spawn for being too cheerful
  • players spawn with starting equipment to make early-game easier
  • added copper equipment also to make early-game easier
  • added many new horror mods including The God and The Disturbed to take advantage of the creepy atmosphere
  • added backpacks and sleeping bags for convenience
  • enhanced performance even more
  • removed herobrine

1.8 - Bugfixing and massive gmeplay revision

  • Natural regeneration is now enabled by default. It will only be disabled once a player has entered the nether
  • all players now start with the survival guide book in their inventory rather than having to craft it
  • the recipes for the dark metal armor now uses the smithing table rather than the crafting table
  • bugfixing for the day length code, so any possible issues with multiplayer are now fixed
  • removed herobrine

1.7 - Large new content addition and minor improvements/tweaks

  • New addition of Reliquary to provide various "holy" methods of dealing with enemies (holy in quotes because it's fabricated deism)
  • a bunch of new recipes and tweaks to implement Reliquary much deeper into the core of the modpack
  • A few other crafting tweaks for conveniece/compatibility
  • Eerie Music returns to fill any holes left in the soundtrack, and also added Whispering Spirits
  • new resource pack that makes the totem of undying look like a crucifix
  • removed the mods Better Villages, Farsight, and Just Enough Breeding. Breeding because of it being broken atm, Farsight out of performance concerns, and Villages because I find them too lively and op, and goes against the modpack's theme.
  • removed herobrine

1.6 - Massive content revise

  • After reconsideration, multiple large-scale mod swaps have been made with the aim of making the game scarier and easier to run (kind of)
  • the largest was removing dynamic trees, primarily due to performance issues and lack of compatibility. Instead, 3 new mods have been added to make vanilla trees more satisfying.
  • Replaced JourneyMap with Map Atlases almost entirely for immersion sake, and also because Atlas's aesthetic more closely matches Tenebrous II's
  • Replaced Gravestones with Corpse, because it's flat-out better
  • A few new additions as well, Butcher's Delight and Burnt have both been added to improve immersion, and add to the gore.
  • Other than these large mod changes, only minor tweaks, although a few are worth mentioning.
  • Friendly mobs spawn much less. I did this to make the world feel more empty during the day time, and I think I succeeded in this.
  • Yet another new title logo, because the old just wasn't cutting it. Also, splash and ending texts come in white.
  • I considered it, but ultimately chose not to add Farmer's Delight. I understand it's popularity, but I chose against it out of fear of it making minecraft feel too cozy, which would go against the design philosophy.
  • removed herobrine

1.5 - A LOT of small additions/changes, visual tweaks, and music

  • A lot of new mods that add small, barely noticeable changes mostly for convenience
  • overhauled ore generation that is now location-dependant
  • small crafting tweaks that adds some small amount of compatibility between Born in Chaos and Blood Magic where I was able, but I'm very limited in that regard
  • A whole slew of new resource packs meant to further heighten the immersion and realism, as I'm always striving to improve in those aspects
  • new music tracks meaning this soundtrack is now 100% custom for the modpack, no modded music is required. Credits text file is found in music resource pack
  • new sounds for eyes in the darkness, as I found the original audio to not be creepy enough
  • I tried to find a resource pack for JourneyMap, but unfortunately none exist. So just change the theme to something that fits.
  • removed herobrine

1.4 - complete overworld generation overhaul, config changes, and other tweaks

  • Complete overhaul to overworld generation thanks to Tectonic, so overall the world is much more natural looking
  • 2 new biomes: the Pale Garden (from minecraft live) and the Creep Forest (from Under the Moon)
  • tweaks to config files, so in general you will never hear the sounds of nature ever again. also fixed issues with farming
  • 2 new resource packs, one adds new fire particles, the other a replacement player animation. The player animation resource pack allows player eyes to be animated as well! find out how here
  • New guide book entry, but it only tells the player how to get their hands on the book tied to Blood Magic
  • new vanillatweaks version with a few more additions. still nothing intrusive though
  • removed herobrine

1.3 - custom hud and ui, and new recipes

  • custom-made textures for hearts, hunger bar, XP bar, and firstaid hud
  • converted all modded guis to be compatible with vanillatweaks darkmode
  • also made vanillatweaks required as a result, so that I could make darkmode and custom backgrounds mandatory, but I made this version much lighter in terms of tweaks so that it didn't get annoying to anyone that didn't want it
  • added recipes that allow you to melt a majority of iron and gold tools into nuggets, receiving 80% of the material back
  • added potion recipes to make potions of withering
  • new recipe for recall potions, and also added the ability to make bandages and plaster using plant strings so it's less annoying early-game
  • removed herobrine

1.2 - additions that mostly change how tenebrous looks and feels. Here's some highlights:

  • support for shaderpacks is added thanks to Oculus! This also boosts performance because of embeddium
  • since there are shaders now, I took the liberty of removing the fog, cloud, and night sky mods, since the shader makes those redundant. If you miss them, feel free to add them back
  • tweaks to immersion and feedback, making the whole game feel much more engaging
  • new animation mods and resource packs, so the world is more lively than ever. This also makes combat more satisfying
  • small qol tweaks that are just a little friendly
  • a completely reworked title screen, now with newly added splash text written by me
  • a completely custom-made credits poem of sorts, written by specifically for you to enjoy. It's not as pretty as minecraft's, but I think it's just as meaningful
  • removed herobrine

1.1 - a number of changes to the base game and gameplay, including:

  • Brand new guide book craftable at any time with a dirt block
  • Removed Sleepn't and replaced with multiple new sleep mechanics
  • Additional music to replace old ones, though not all music is replaced
  • Mod compatibility for Mob Sunscreen and Spoilage, as well as the addition of salted food
  • Added VanillaTweaks resource pack
  • Certain resource packs are now required to be enabled
  • Replaced fog mod for improved ambience
  • removed herobrine
